Looking at Xincheng's growth as a singer over the last couple of years, his improvement in terms of his comfort level on stage and his ability to handle different genres is really noticeable even to a layman.

Even back in 2020, he already had a naturally gifted voice and better technical skills than most pop singers - when I first came across a clip of him singing with TSY and SWL at the Golden Eagle opening ceremony, I just fell for his vocals from almost the first few notes.

I couldn't believe he wasn't a professional singer back then. But it's obvious why he was so good - he spent his secondary school years as a song and dance major at BDA from 2008 to 2014 and then went on to be a musical theatre major at CAD from 2014 to 2018. When he was in college, he was known for practicing his vocal skills everywhere, even in the dorm toilets (lol); he was part of an acapella unit his freshman year that competed in an intercollegiate competition and placed 6th. Xincheng's supposedly the one who recruited the other members and arranged the music they sang. (In retrospect, it's no wonder he was so exemplary as the tenor section leader on Voices of Youth ahaha.)

So he was always technically very competent as a vocalist but what he lacked in the past was the ability to develop as singer. His original company, EE Media, was known as a music company but they pushed Xincheng more as an actor - apart from CNY or year end shows we rarely saw him perform songs, not even his own OSTs, in the ten years he was an EE Media artist.

After signing on to Tencent Music as a singer in late 2024, he poured a lot more of his time and energy into his singing as well as composing his own songs. He's been undertaking regular vocal lessons even between his filming schedules. There's so many vlogs of him preparing for songs and getting vocal guidance for his music variety stints where it's obvious he's actually in his caravan in between breaks. His Dr Vox vocal training bottle is never far from his hand even on the filming set.

IIRC, when he was working on the You Are My Lover Friend drama, Yuwen even jokingly complained about how much he sings on set between takes so he promised to limit it to 4 hours a day - because that's how much his vocal trainer asked him to open up his voice.

In mid 2025, he returned to the musical stage for the first time in six years playing the lead role Su Shi in a historical musical and he managed to pull it off with less than a month of intensive lessons and rehearsal - somehow he managed to do all of this in between filming three dramas and a movie cameo back to back.

It's not been easy for him to juggle a full-on career as an actor with launching a new career as a singer. In an interview Xincheng gave late 2025, he specifically mentioned he wanted to slow down a little and spend time working on his music album - he originally planned to release it before his first FM in August 2025 but he was only able to do a partial release.

That's why I was surprised to see him take on roles in Qin Mi and Jian Lai almost back to back in 2025. But somehow Xincheng still found the time and made the time to compose and release a further three tracks this year. That's also a fourth unreleased track that he previewed at his concert a couple of days ago.
