This legendary scene is from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which was released in theaters on August 17, 1979. Pontius Pilate (Michael Palin) tries to introduce his friend “Biggus Dickus,” and the entire room of Roman soldiers completely loses it. The more Pilate gets angry and threatens them, the harder they try (and fail) to keep a straight face. John Cleese as the centurion trying to hold it together is perfection. It’s a masterclass in escalating absurdity. The name itself is already funny, but the way the Pythons milk every second of suppressed laughter and official outrage makes it one of the all-time great comedy sequences. Nearly 50 years later, it still works perfectly.
