Overwhelmingly, though, research has focussed on the experiences and factors that work to inhibit gifted Aboriginal students when attempting to meet their academic potential.

’Gifted Aboriginal students have long been acknowledged as being at risk of experiencing ‘double jeopardy’ (Cooper, 2005), meaning they are likely to face challenges that arise from both their Aboriginal and giftedness status within the schooling system.
Despite this, little research has been undertaken into what it means to be a gifted Aboriginal student...the factors that support high ability Aboriginal might be different to those that may be important to their non Aboriginal peers.
She is also the fiercely proud great, great granddaughter of William Cooper; the Aboriginal warrior who is largely credited as the founding father of NAIDOC.
We hope that we can not only all learn something new, but stand also publicly in our support and solidarity with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, friends, colleagues and communities this week.
