We await the WG response to the latest UK Gov Industrial Strategy update.
Adam Price has set out an ambitious vision for economic growth. Now business and industry want to see that ambition matched with a credible plan to deliver growth, investment and jobs in Wales.
Jonathan Lewis is obviously a highly qualified person to be leading the work and will have a lot of credibility with the business community etc.
But there do appear to be some early strains in what exactly the direction of travel is on econ policy.
People versus the establishment?
Are you kidding?
Nigel Farage is the son of a stockbroker who went to Dulwich College and then follows his dad into the city, gets gifted millions, promotes crypto and gold bullion, been in politics for decades - he IS the establishment
EXCL - female Labour MPs are asking Andy Burnham to commit to ensuring at least fifty% of his ministers are women. The womens PLP have also requested that half of his Number 10 staff are female and that he commits to giving the role of DPM to a woman. https://t.co/dFOYK4VNVK
NEW: PLP vice-chair, former Ed Miliband advisor & ally, Polly Billington, on speculation around a return of David Miliband tells @AndrewMarr9 “we need less lads lads lads & more diversity. The world has moved on significantly since the 1990s. We have an extremely talented PLP”
This call comes not from a member of the Labour group but an Indy Cllr, currently Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Economic Growth, who will be central to discussions the future of Tata and wider Port Talbot regen. It’ll be interesting to see whether Labour Cllr’s follow.
A councillor in Port Talbot has called for Andy Burnham to re-nationalise the steelworks there, after the prospective new Prime Minister said he wanted to devolve more powers to towns "undergoing industrial transition".
The Under 19 Euros are underway in North Wales 🏴
Our very own @LLTFC_Official Under 11s had a blast seeing stars of the future take to the field as @Cymru took on @SEFutbol in Wrexham on Sunday.
Shame about the score but Cymru did us proud and hats off to the Spanish team and their families, too.
A massive thanks to all the grassroots coaches, volunteers and parents who help make these experiences happen - a brilliant experience for our future Messis and Gareth Bales!

@DeansOfCardiff Specific mention of Port Talbot in the speech, a signal that Wales is central to Burnham’s economic vision, not just the devolution debate? Constitutional discussions will continue, but for businesses and workers the real test is whether it delivers investment, jobs and growth.
@MikeHughes_ The devolution debate will continue, but for businesses and workers the real test is whether these ambitions deliver investment, jobs and a clear industrial strategy. If his vision is about rebuilding industry and driving regional growth, places like Port Talbot will be key.
Mentioning Port Talbot wasn’t just symbolic, it was a clear signal that a Burnham government would see Wales’ industrial future as central to the UK’s economic renewal, not peripheral.
Andy Burnham heard the same message from business leaders in Swansea during GE24: the Greater Manchester model works.
Wales has embraced many of the same principles, but now needs to match that ambition with delivery, giving investors the certainty to back long-term growth.
EXCLUSIVE from @oliver_wright and @benclatworthy
* The south is paying the price for economic failure in the north, Andy Burnham is expected to say next week as he unveils radical plans to devolve powers and money from central government to England’s regions
* In his first big policy speech since Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation as prime minister, Burnham will set out an economic strategy under which Whitehall budgets will be slashed and money diverted to be spent by regional mayors
* Burnham will argue that giving mayors new powers and funding to deliver social housing, tackle welfare dependency and run post-16 education will boost economic growth across the country
* This in return will reduce the dependency of the north and Midlands on tax “handouts” from London and the southeast
* Burnham will commit himself to spending a significant amount of his expected premiership in a “No10 of the North” to show his commitment to devolution and rebalancing the economy
* He is also expected to set out plans for a “devolution-first” agenda across Whitehall, under which departments will be expected to assess which areas of their responsibility and funding should be transferred to regional governments
* It is likely to reduce the size of Whitehall as swathes of roles in departments such as transport, education and work and pensions are devolved
* The National Office of Statistics calculates that people in London pay £24,400 in tax on average but get back just £19,500 in spending on public services. In the southeast they pay in £17,600 and get £15,900 back. Yet in the northwest they pay £12,700 in taxes and get back £17,300 in public spending. In the northeast it is £11,200 and £17,400 respectively

This raises more Qs about whether enough new investment is coming in, to replace the jobs and opportunities lost with the blast furnaces. Pressure now on UK and Welsh Governments to attract replacement investment and keep confidence in the area’s future.

Barack: You told me all those years ago that you couldn’t promise me the world, but you could promise me an interesting life. Of course, you outdid yourself and managed to give me both.
Eight years in the crucible, and not once did you melt from the heat. Not once did you let it harden you. Instead, you used it to reveal your truest essence: your stubborn optimism and unflinching courage, your dazzling brilliance and unpretentious decency, your ferocious work ethic and absolutely unshakable moral fiber.
@Joe___Allen Also today’s skills audit announcement. This isn’t launching a brand new audit from scratch, but reframing work already underway as part of a broader skills reform agenda, announced under the last WG in March this year.

With 8 of the biggest defence companies based in Wales supporting skilled jobs, how will the new Plaid WG respond to Welsh universities missing out? It’ll likely face pressure to back defence related skills, manufacturing & supply chain investment where it benefits Welsh workers.
24 colleges and universities across England will share £80 million through the Strategic Priorities Grant, the largest single initiative in the Defence Industrial Strategy skills package.
The funds will help train the next generation of students for critical careers in defence.
FM himself clearly recognises importance of Wylfa.
Ultimately he commits here to "work positively" re the SMR plan.
But given Plaid are campaigning against nuclear elsewhere & the new Energy Minister is anti-nuclear, fair to say new WG is cooler than the last on the project.
