Uttarakhand: Water Seepage Reported Inside NTPC’s Tapovan Tunnel

A small cavity has reportedly developed inside the under-construction Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Project tunnel in Chamoli, followed by water seepage.

As a precaution, workers from the affected section were evacuated and work there was stopped. NTPC teams have begun treating and securing the cavity using specialised equipment.

NTPC officials have said that such small cavities can occur during tunnelling and that there is currently no cause for alarm. The situation is being monitored closely.

The development comes years after the 2021 Chamoli disaster, when a massive flash flood devastated the Rishiganga and Tapovan projects and claimed more than 200 lives.

In a region that has already witnessed the devastating consequences of a mountain disaster, every incident inside a tunnel deserves close monitoring and complete transparency.
