Brought my legally blind daughter (and kid entrepreneur!) to an amazing disability tech innovation night…she was a natural at networking, and met some fantastic folks!
My 9 year old (one of the future Braille All Stars) and I (as catcher) were supposed to be on the field today…bummer about the weather. Thx to all who were coming to watch and support this game of competitive adaptive baseball for the blind.
Unfortunately, the beep baseball game between Adaptive Sports New England’s Boston Strong and the Association of Blind Citizens’ Boston Renegades has been canceled due to the rain. At this time, there is no make up date.
My daughter & the inventor of Braille (a tactile code for the blind to read/write by touch) share the same birthday. Jan 4 is now also known as World Braille Day. My daughter (who uses Braille) was invited to share this w/her entire school during morning announcements today!!
A lot of my former students keep in touch with me, and I always wake up to happy new year messages from them. As I was scrolling through them this morning, I received an update from a former student that is a college freshman. This update made my heart so happy:
My 8yr old just stumped Santa. As they were discussing Christmas wishes, she asked if he knew what kind of cane she’s holding. After a few second pause, she informed him how a white cane is a tool for her cuz she’s visually impaired. You’re never too old to learn something new.
Today is National Adoption Day & yesterday was National Braille Press Day in Boston. 2 worlds colliding as my 8yr old read a poem in Braille (about being adopted) on stage at the @BraillePress gala. A dual media learner, she wrote it in 2nd grade & learned to Braille it this yr.
It’s fun to hear our co-founder @jburkejburke tell the TBD Angels origin story.
Jason and @SalehDaher also talk about @AllstageInvest, entrepreneurship and the role of data+AI in early-stage companies
October 15 is white cane awareness day. A white cane is a tool that many blind & visually impaired folks use as tactile feedback to safely avoid obstacles and get around independently. There are many types of white canes. My daughter has a folding cane with a rolling ball tip.
My son showed me a paper he had to write for school that involved “serfs” …but he wrote “Smurfs” instead…which caused me to go into hysterics. Other than that, it was actually a really good paper.
Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield.
Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation.
Our deepest love and thoughts are with Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the Wakefield family.
My daughter’s summer camp swim teacher had a Braille message attached to her swim test so she could read it. Her camp counselors were excited to present this to her, and my 8yr old was beaming!! The extra little effort often makes the biggest impact.
July is Disability Pride month. We were lucky enough to celebrate at Fenway last week, and our special hats just arrived, with “Red Sox” in Braille embroidered on it so it’s tactile.
Five years ago, we met the love of our lives when this little girl became a member of our family. She has captured our hearts in ways we never could’ve imagined.
