The @Bad_Natives_Pod may want to issue some corrections. Your guest, @AndrewMwenda, mixed up a lot of facts about my engagement with the Stephen Nuwagaba case in this episode.

-Stephen was a client who approached us at @chapterfourug claiming he was a victim/survivor of torture. He had visible marks of torture on his feet, elbow, and soles of his feet. He walked with a limp.

-Owing to limited documentation of his claim, we were hesitant to pursue civil remedy for his case. We instead sought to have his claims investigated for a criminal remedy against those he accused of perpetrating torture against him.

-We approached CID HQ in Kibuli to report a case of torture.

-CID advised us to file the case with the institution concerned. We reported the case to the Deputy Commandant of CMI of our own accord, not Mwenda’s.

-The Deputy CMI boss, Rugumayo, and officer Frank Nyakairu investigated the claims and found them credible. They arrested the CMI officer who committed the acts of torture but were dillydallying on the issue of the return of Stephen's property.

-It was here that Stephen asked to be introduced to Saleh. I sent Saleh an email narrating the claims of torture and asked him to help in investigating it since it involved security officials. I never met Saleh but exchanged emails a few times about the case.

-Here we tried also to meet the CMI boss. We failed many times. He did not return my calls or reply to our messages on his personal cell.

- On the advice of known colleagues, we then approached Andrew Mwenda, a close friend, kinsman and confidant of Birungi, the CMI henchman at the time.

-On Andrew’s cell, I spoke to Birungi. I never met Birungi and do not know what he looks like in person. I later learned that Stephen met Birungi, who I am told compensated him, returned his property (phones and laptops), and issued him a passport.

That is where our engagement with the case ended.
