1996 Relived - Rd 3 Rio | The final lap in what for sure was Andre Ribeiro's career defining moment winning in his home country of Brazil at the inaugural race in Rio. Listen to the crowd!
In August 2008 SpaceX had just lost its third rocket in a row. Musk's old PayPal partners put in $20 million that month. At the June 2026 IPO their stake was worth over $50 billion.
In 2014 one of them told a Stanford class why Musk wins.
His name is Peter Thiel. His Founders Fund put about $600 million into SpaceX in total. In 2004 he wrote Facebook its first outside check, $500,000 for 10.2%.
The 50-minute video is that class, a startup course taught by a 29-year-old Sam Altman.
The formula is two letters. X is the value a business creates for the world. Y is the share of X it keeps. Thiel's point: X and Y have nothing to do with each other.
Size is not profit. In 2012 US airlines took in $195 billion of domestic revenue and Google about $50 billion. Together the airlines were worth about a quarter of Google.
Watch which way they lie. A monopoly claims competition: Google, with two thirds of search, calls itself a technology company. A business with no edge claims it is unique: the only British restaurant in Palo Alto.
Own the whole chain. Thiel says Tesla and SpaceX had no single 10x breakthrough. The key was "the complex vertically integrated monopoly structure they had." Tesla sells its own cars, so dealers can't take the money. SpaceX makes what other rocket builders buy from subcontractors.
Ten times better or nothing. A check sent on eBay took seven to ten days to clear. PayPal was more than ten times faster.
Durability beats growth. When Thiel ran PayPal's numbers in March 2001, about three quarters of the company's value came from cash flows in 2011 and beyond.
Follow the crowd and you buy the top. Thiel calls a rush into the same thing "often proof of insanity." His example is Harvard Business School classes that ignored tech except in 1999 and 2000, when they timed the peak perfectly. The Nasdaq lost 78% by October 2002.
"The cumulative profits in the US have been approximately zero."
That is Thiel on a hundred years of US airlines.
Warren Buffett had said the same zero back in 1999. In 2016 he bought four airlines anyway, and in 2020 he sold them at a loss.
Every startup pitch deck opens with the size of the market. Every stock tip from a friend opens the same way.
Before you buy your next stock, ask how much of the value it creates the company gets to keep. If the answer is close to zero, you are buying an airline.
In March 2024 Jane Street paid about $100 million for 3.3 million Anthropic shares. They became about $2.2 billion. The seller was the bankruptcy estate of Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX.
Bankman-Fried learned to trade at Jane Street from 2013 to 2017. At FTX he put about $500 million into Anthropic, back when it was a small AI lab.
When FTX collapsed, the estate had to sell assets to repay customers. It sold two-thirds of the Anthropic stake for $884 million, around $30 a share. Jane Street was the second-largest buyer.
FTX customers got back dollars at November 2022 prices. Every gain those shares made after the sale went to the buyers.
Then the AI boom repriced everything. In the third quarter of 2025, Jane Street reportedly booked about $830 million of gains on private holdings, mostly Anthropic. That was roughly 12% of the quarter's revenue.
The $2.2 billion is what those shares were worth at Anthropic's $380 billion valuation in February 2026. In May, Anthropic raised money at $965 billion.
Bankman-Fried is serving 25 years. His best bet ended up with the firm that taught him to trade.
The full story of how they got there is below.
In 52 BC, Julius Caesar was surrounded by 300,000 warriors, yet he pulled off a move so brilliant that military academies still teach it 2,000 years later.
