Yesterday’s post got some amazing comments, and a few of you mentioned GTO—something I’m just starting to learn.

From what I understand, it’s less about doing crazy math at the table and more about playing in a balanced way that’s hard to exploit.

Boy, was I wrong.
​On my very first hand, I looked down at pocket Jacks (JJ). The flop came A - 7 - 2 rainbow. The guy across from me—let's call him Uncle Dave, a math teacher—instantly bet big. My heart was racing. I really wanted to call him because maybe he was bluffing?

The takeaway: Math isn't everything—you still need psychology and gut feelings—but math is the absolute foundation. Without it, you're just guessing in the dark.

He explained pot odds and equity right there at the table. He showed me that calling there was statistically a losing play because of how few outs I had against a potential Ace. I folded, and sure enough, he flipped over A - K.
