@DMartinez5200@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Hi Danny,
I think it is important that our classrooms are accepting and safe for all of our students. Our differences are what make us unique, but they can also build our community. It creates opportunities for our students to be accepting of others.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 We can be advocates by standing up for or students needs. We need to foster relationships with our students by listening and engaging with them to figure our what their needs may be. We are a role model for our students, so we need to show them what a advocate looks like.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I engage in self-reflection about any implicit biases that I may have. Everyone has implicit biases so it's important to be aware of what our implicit biases are and reflect on what were doing about them.
@Gissell22076662@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Hi Gisselle, I think it's important that you mentioned reflecting on our own behavior daily. As educators, we have to hold ourselves to high standards in order to be a good role model for our students.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Having empathy means that you can imagine what someone else if feeling even if you've never been through it. Our students have lives that may be different from our own. Its important to be empathic to understand our students and be a support system for them.
@Ariannaarceoo@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I appreciate that you brought up accepting different opinions. I think it is important that we empower our students to use their voices and allow all their opinions to be heard, especially in our classrooms. #EDEL5200
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 Q3: Math is treated differently compared to other subjects. Math anxiety stems from the fact that students are expected to memorize so much and are often timed on their tests. This creates an added stress to our students. #EDEL5200
@gelsv11 @WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler I like how you mentioned no rush for the right answer. That's a great point. The emphasize is on how we can solve it, rather than how fast we solved it. #EDEL5200
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 Q2: We can encourage students to use numbers flexibly by doing daily number talks with them. We can show them that there can be multiple strategies for solving problems. This allows our students to express their thinking and have conversations about numbers. #EDEL5200
@Angel3Urbina@DMartinez5200@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 They should be able to look at that problem and think flexibly/have number sense. They could think 6x5 is 30 if i subtract 6 I'll get 24. They could think I know 6x3 is 18, if I add 6 more I'll get 24.
@Angel3Urbina@DMartinez5200@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 That's the problem, its not the right way. Of course there are math facts that students need to know, for example addition. We need to teach our students to be flexible. 6x4 shouldn't just be 24.
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 The memorization of math facts is unnecessary/damaging because it doesn't allow our students to be flexible with numbers. They need to have a strong number sense to work with numbers. Memorization doesn't allow them to find multiple solutions by thinking of others ways to solve.
@Angel3Urbina@DMartinez5200@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 One way we overcome it, is by not emphasizing rote learning of multiplication facts. We need our students to have a good number sense and learn how to manipulate numbers. We shouldn't be creating the anxiety and then trying to help them overcome it. #EDEL5200
The past two weeks have been a while ride. I started the first 6 weeks of the school year teaching kindergarten. Then I got displaced and moved to 5th grade. Happy to have survived my first week in 5th grade!
I just wanted to shoutout @DrEddiesClass for being an amazing online professor. I've taken a lot of online classes but never one like his. You can tell all the effort he puts into the class to make sure his students understand. I really enjoyed EDTE 4200. You are appreciated.
@jtmusmc@teachsci8 Hi Jason,
I really like what you said about creativity being the foundation of advancement because its so true. People don't even know how creative they can be and technology gives them ideas to be creative. #csubted@DrEddiesClass
@teachsci8 A1: We can promote students publishing and producing with technology by creating engaging and fun projects for students to be apart of. It's easy to consume, but we have to show kids that they can be the ones to make things for others to consume. #CSUBTED@DrEddiesClass
