Half of all Americans have an immediate family member who has been incarcerated – that's millions and millions of people who have been plagued by the wide-reaching effects of mass incarceration.
Unsurprisingly, the US carceral system is still in its flop era.
It does not keep anyone safe – in reality, the effects it has on incarcerated people, their families, and their communities are cruel and devastating, and we're all worse off for it.
Dehumanization is not simply a side effect of incarceration: It is intentional and has been a part of prisons in the US since the first brick was laid.
That's why advocates in Virginia at @HumanizationPro are fighting to humanize those behind bars & drive policy change.

Across the prisons in the US- meals like this will be created by those serving time. This is a way that people celebrate holidays on the inside. Making huge meals to celebrate together.
They don’t have what we do- but always find things to be Thankful for!!!
Reminder this Veterans Day: While comprehensive data on the relationship between military service & incarceration is not available, one thing is clear.
The US has left many veterans behind & does not provide enough support for one of the most vulnerable populations.
Old anxiety dream: oh no, a test I didn't know about or study for.
New anxiety dream: oh no, I'm late for a talk I didn't know I was supposed to give and haven't prepared.
No, having 34 felony convictions does not stop Trump from being president.
But felony convictions DO prohibit 19 million people in the US from earning a living in more ordinary roles, like firefighting or pest control work.
