@jdawncarlson "Soc community lounge", "soc lounge", or "soc cafe" all seem like solid starting options? The name could always evolve as people use the space and start to create their own impressions of it :)
am I capable of writing a sentence about my research that doesn't contain at least one parenthetical aside, m-dashes, and a semi-colon? only time will tell
me, 10 minutes in to vaguely trying to explain the financialization of housing to a friend: ok, do you know what pork futures are? no? ok, have you read Hogfather by Terry Pratchett?
Does anyone have any advice &/or readings on feeling too slow for academia? I'm feeling a real disconnect between institutional timelines and the timelines that I personally need to do creative, thoughtful work without sacrificing my mental/physical health or enjoyment of work
major props to @_rinajames for sharing their comps note organization strategy a million years ago because my new system is just a tweaked version of that
thrilled to announce that after almost four (4) years in grad school, I have just now figured out a semi-functional system for organizing my reading notes
@peter__ore Tl;dr is that everything goes in OneNote! Unique notebooks for each project, sub-sections within notebooks, subpages within sections. Makes everything so, so, so searchable at different levels. I'm down to talk on the phone/Zoom to show in detail if it'd be useful!

Would it be weird to email a professor out of the blue to say I loved their (academic) book? I probably won't have reason to cite said book in my published work, but it reminded me why I love sociology + I'm still thinking about it months later
What is the street for? By changing the answer to that question, @Anne_Hidalgo is on the fast track to reclaim #Paris for human life.

when I tell you I screamed when I saw this....
Per the NerdWallet cost of living calculator, that's the equivalent of $34,683 in Tucson. So even accounting for cost of living, that's about twice what grads in my program make
concept: if there are no times that work for all committee members in a 50+ option doodle poll, the student just automatically passes the oral defense without having to schedule it
UA announcing a planned "day of healing, memory, and hope" for the 2-year anniversary of covid closures on the SAME DAY they stop requiring masks inside (thus making inside spaces significantly more dangerous) is.... really something
