My Experience with Absa Ghana's Virtual Card Service
I would like to share my recent experience with Absa Ghana so that others can make informed decisions.
In May 2026, I noticed that Absa had introduced virtual cards on its mobile app. Since I had previously received calls from Absa encouraging me to actively use my account instead of letting it remain dormant, I decided to explore the new feature.
Before using it, I contacted customer support and spent considerable time asking about how the virtual cards worked, including the applicable charges and terms. Based on the information provided, I felt comfortable using the service.
For about two months, I used the virtual card to make legitimate online purchases without any issues.
Then, one day, I noticed that my virtual cards had disappeared from my app dashboard.
Shortly afterward, one of the merchants I frequently use, https://t.co/K1VrJ0sZyo, informed me by email that they had received chargeback notifications stating that transactions made with my card were reported as unauthorized and that the card had been reported as lost or stolen.
This came as a complete surprise because I never disputed those transactions, nor did I report my card as lost or stolen.
My biggest concern is that I was never contacted beforehand. I received no phone call, email, SMS, or in-app notification asking me to verify the transactions or informing me that there was a concern with my account. As a result, I was left in the difficult position of explaining to the merchant why legitimate transactions had suddenly become the subject of chargebacks.
When I contacted Absa to seek clarification, I expected a simple answer to a straightforward question: Who initiated the chargeback?
Instead of providing an explanation over the phone, I was asked to visit the Head Office to meet with the Fraud Team. I found this disappointing because, considering the nature of my complaint, I believed the bank should have been able to explain whether the chargeback was initiated by me, by the bank, or by another party before requiring me to travel to the Head Office.
This raises serious questions for me. How can a chargeback alleging that transactions were unauthorized be opened without my request, while I, as the account holder, am unable to obtain a clear explanation as to who initiated it?
The consequences have been significant. The chargebacks have severely damaged my relationship and credibility with AmaJova, exposing me to allegations that I disputed legitimate transactions and even the possibility of further action by the merchant, despite the fact that I did not initiate the chargebacks.
I believe customers deserve clear communication, transparency, and the opportunity to clarify any suspected issues before actions are taken that could affect their reputation with merchants or disrupt legitimate transactions.
I sincerely hope Absa Ghana acts swiftly to resolve this matter.
I did not request these chargebacks, I expect the bank to withdraw them promptly while it continues its investigation. Doing so would help prevent further damage to my reputation and avoid unnecessary legal or commercial complications with the merchant.
This post reflects my personal experience, and I hope it encourages constructive dialogue and improvements in customer communication and dispute-handling processes.
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
