In 1903, a Belgian missionary priest working among the black Catholics in the USA wrote a confidential report addressed to Pope Leo XIII on the "Miserable Condition of Catholic Negroes in America." The priest had been previously personally blessed by Leo XIII when he was Archbishop of Perugia. He now pleads with him in the name of St. Peter Claver (whom Leo XIII canonized) to intervene against the prejudices of certain bishops and clergy in the USA against the blacks. He says some have an outright disdain for blacks, but others are simply too afraid of how their white Protestant countrymen will react.

Leo XIII died right about that time, Fr. Anciaux added a plea to the newly-elected Pius X. He also obtained the support of his cousin, Fr. Le Grand, who obtained two audiences with Pius X. The Pope promised prompt action.

Not long after, on Jan 18, 1904, Cardinal Gotti, Prefect of the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith, sent a letter to Cardinal Gibbons via the Apostolic Delegate warning that: "It has been referred to this Sacred Congregation that in some of the Dioceses of the United States, the condition of the Catholic negro, not only in respect to the other faithful, but also in respect to their pastors and Bishops, is very humiliating and entirely different from that of the whites," and that "this is not in conformity with the spirit of Christianity which proclaims the equality of all men before God, that equality which foments charity and tends to the increase of Religion by multiplying the number of conversions."

Certain Catholics today who implicitly (or even explicitly) promote or defend segregation of blacks and speak of a "White America" should realize that they are following in the footsteps of Protestants and a few uncharitable clergy influenced by them, not the teaching of Rome. Catholics who know their faith won't be duped by them.

Those poorly educated Catholics who fall for the "White America" propaganda are falling right into the trap of the Communists and liberals of our own day who seek to stir up racial animosities for reasons that in reality have nothing to do with "justice." They, unfortunately, only serve to turn people away from the Catholic Faith which they have misrepresented as supporting their errors.

No the imposter "Jewish Jesus" anti-Christ will not claim to be God but only the Moshiach and "a son" of God thus denying Christ's divinity without appearing to deny Christ. He will point to his father satan/Lucifer and say to his followers: "Behold my father and your God". The spirit of Satan will expel the Holy Spirit from those who take his Mark. This counterfeit spirit or "image of the Beast" will then reside in the temple of the body and satan will sit in the body temple of the body host as if he were God demanding worship and obedience.

The decoy antichrist however will later claim to be God in order to convince Christians he is the great anti-Christ. The imposter "Jewish Jesus" will then slay him in order to convince people he is Jesus Christ returned in flesh to rule a millenial kingdom and fulfill prophecy.

What happens if all the cardinals become heretics during a vacancy when there is no Pope to create legitimate Cardinals? Who elects the next Pope? (HINT: It's not the Thesis Cassiciacum).

A theologian answers:

OBJECTION: Only Cardinals can elect a Pope.
ANSWER: "[This objection] contains manifest error and is contrary to history, namely, that only the cardinals are the successors of the Apostles, and that to them alone and to no others can the right of electing the pope be given even by the whole Church...
"[T]here was a time when there were no cardinals. Likewise, there was a time when the whole clergy, indeed the entire body of the faithful elected the Pope...
"Likewise, if, when the see is vacant, all the cardinals were to become heretics, as is possible, since they are no more confirmed than others, and especially than the Apostles at the time of the Passion; or if they were killed, or otherwise died, could not a pope still be elected in the Church? It is certain that this is so; and yet not by cardinals, as has been noted."

Notice, he does not say that the heretical cardinals would retain their right to elect the Pope and end the vacancy. This is because it has been the practically unanimous tradition and teaching of theologians that public heretics cannot hold office in the Church and only have as much jurisdiction as the Church supplies them for individual acts when necessary for the good of the faithful. It is not for the good of the Church or of souls that the sole right to elect a Pope should be held hostage by public heretics because the Church supplies them this power in such a way that Catholics can do nothing.

Those who defend the Thesis, depend heavily on their claim that such public heretics are still within the Church and still capable of holding office. They can quote an extreme minority of theologians who held this, but the opinion barely hangs on by a thread when contrasted with tradition and the teaching of the vast majority. There is a constant tradition, incorporated in various laws of the Church over the centuries, that public heresy is in an entirely different league than any other crime or sin, and that such heretics are totally cut off from the Church and can be judged even by the faithful who are to avoid them. Besides, those few theologians who taught otherwise never taught the anomaly of a "material" Pope who would only have *part* of his jurisdiction. No one has ever taught what the Thesis teaches.

Let me anticipate an objection some may try to make against this quote I have given from Fr. Jean Gerson. Some will try to object that he was a Conciliarist and that his opinion has no value. This is not a correct statement as is. St. Robert Bellarmine, in his extensive writings against the excommunicated priest, Paolo Sarpi, brings up Gerson many times. He defends Gerson against the charges made by Paolo who attempts to misuse his writings to defend his own disobedience to the Pope. Bellarmine says that Gerson wrote during the Great Western Schism when it was true to say that a general council had power to judge the claims of the doubtful popes. Bellarmine teaches this in his own writings. Gerson certainly did not believe that a council was above an indisputably true Pope; he did not doubt the supremacy of the Pope. He did go to some extremes, Bellarmine says, in determining the extent of the power of a general council, but he was not a Conciliarist in the heretical and condemned sense. He was a Catholic, as Bellarmine says, and he was a highly regarded theologian and pious author. His treatise "On Leading the Little Children to Christ" is a classic praised by various saints. He was particularly known for his charity and prudence in dealing with the bitter divisions of the GWS.

In any case, this particular passage I have quoted has nothing to do with the errors of Conciliarism. It simply addresses the case where there is no Pope and there are no cardinals to elect, so a general council does so instead. This is standard teaching of theologians such as St. Antoninus, Agostino Trionfo, and others, who teach that in the absence of cardinals, the election would devolve upon the whole Church, and upon no particular group of persons within the Church, and should be done by an imperfect council. Theologians taught this both before and after Conciliarism was clearly condemned.

Fr. Gerson was highly influential in bringing about a final solution to the Great Western Schism through a general council and an extraordinary manner of electing Pope Martin V. His writings are of great interest given his learning and piety and have often been referenced by later theologians for this reason.

1 - There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church

2 - Submission to the Roman Pontiff is necessary for salvation
