4. Why is it a Pile of Clothes?

In interplanetary migration, the weight of your belongings is directly tied to cost. For that reason, the first thing people discarded was their clothing. In any case, clothes made for Earth weren’t suited to the environments of other planets.

The place where all those discarded clothes gathered was probably, at first, an organized collection site that could have been called a clothing depot. But as more and more people left Earth, the number of discarded clothes kept growing, and eventually that depot became the mountain of clothes we see today.

5. The Appearance of the Villain

If I had to describe the villain’s appearance in words…

Its face is that of a baby. The face of a newborn, or at most a toddler. Round cheeks, large round eyes, and a small mouth. The expression still carries the innocence of someone who hasn’t yet learned about the world.

But beneath that face is a gigantic body. A body far larger than an adult’s, grotesquely swollen. Thick arms and legs, broad shoulders, and hands large enough to crush a person. The proportions are strangely distorted, almost reminiscent of the alien from the film Men in Black.

The reason the villain takes this form is to represent the innermost part of a person that became frozen in time and has burst outward.

Doesn’t everyone have a moment like that? A time when they weren’t loved enough, lost something too early, or were broken by some event. People lock those buried emotions away inside themselves, giving them a room in their hearts and feeding them every day with self-pity, regret, resentment, and unresolved injustice. Fed continuously, those emotions grow larger and larger.

The reason the villain guards the mound is simple. Because it knows that the answer lies inside it, and that answer could bring about its own end. The moment the protagonist uncovers the oasis hidden at the peak of the clothes mountain, the villain will no longer have anything left to feed on.
