The public spoke, and the government listened. This is how democracy should function.

I thank every citizen who turned up at Lalbagh, under the leadership of 91-year-old Yellappa Reddy Sir, to oppose the 5% park diversion law.

I also commend the Chief Minister for respecting public opinion and deciding to withdraw this draconian law.

But the fight is not over.

Until the disastrous Tunnel Road project is officially dropped, neither Lalbagh nor the ancient Peninsular Gneiss Rock is safe.

Today, I argued before the Hon’ble High Court opposing the Tunnel Road project. The Court has directed the Geological Survey of India to place its report before it and fixed the next hearing for September 10.

The government has also amended the Karnataka Tank Conservation Act, reducing the lake buffer zone from 30 metres to just 3 metres to facilitate the Short Tunnel project at Hebbal Lake. This amendment too must be withdrawn.

Our fight to protect Bengaluru’s lakes, parks and green spaces, and for the sustainable development of our city, will continue.

I sincerely commend the Chief Minister for this decision.

Governments earn the respect of citizens when they defer to the will of the people. Well done, sir.

For me, this has never been a political fight. It has always been about doing what is right for Bengaluru.

The Tunnel Road has now become a “women empowerment” project!

The Chief Minister has asked women entrepreneurs to support it.

Perhaps he could begin women’s empowerment by giving at least one woman a seat in his own Cabinet.

Every week, there is a new justification for this stupid project.

First, it was a matrimonial project: Bengaluru needs more roads and cars because apparently men without cars won’t get brides.

Now, it is women’s empowerment.

What next? National security? Build the tunnel so state secrets can be transported underground?

The desperation to invent new reasons to justify a bad project is becoming more entertaining than the project itself.
