बोधोऽन्यसाधनेभ्यो हि साक्षान्मोक्षैकसाधनम् ।
पाकस्य वह्निवज्ज्ञानं विना मोक्षो न सिध्यति ॥
(आत्मबोध २)
Compared to other means, it is knowledge alone that is the direct means to liberation. Just like cooking cannot occur without fire (heat), liberation is impossible in the absence of knowledge.

Self-knowledge is the direct means to liberation. In the shvetAshvatara upaniShad this is beautifully illustrated in the mantra:
यदा चर्मवदाकाशं वेष्टयिष्यन्ति मानवाः।
तदा देवमविज्ञाय दुःखस्यान्तो भविष्यति॥
The cessation of sorrow (in other words, liberation) in the absence of knowledge can occur on only one condition - when it is possible for people to roll up the sky like a mat, an impossibility.

The implication is that without knowledge, liberation is impossible. Bhagavatpada provides an illustration: पाकस्य वह्निवत् – The relationship between knowledge and liberation is like the one between fire (heat) and cooking. The sole and direct means to cook anything is heat - without heat, cooking is impossible. No doubt there are other supporting factors like vessels, food grains, fuel etc, but heat is the central element to the cooking process; it is also the direct factor – it must necessarily be present in the instant prior to the cooking of the food. The same is the case for knowledge and liberation – knowledge is the sole and direct means for liberation, not actions, meditation or worship which are all required and have to be practiced beforehand.
