@TazWes@mymaats@Dave_Eby The comments were intended to show that Ravi’s commitment to homes was instead a commitment to the hotel industry to build more hotels. It had nothing to do with providing affordable housing. The hotels funded a report that used flawed data to wipe out legal non-confirming STRs.
The COV councillors explicitly asked the Province of BC to make them illegal. 634 legal vacation rentals by owners in the downtown core were wiped out and everyone has lost because of it. Tourism is down, Hotel Prices are for the rich only. And mom and pop owners lost their investments
The City of Victoria pulled a very suspect move when they first encouraged legal tourism zoned, licensed vacation rentals by owners in new condos being built in the downtown core, so that they could rejuvenate down and out neighbourhoods. Then once the neighbourhoods were thriving....
This post is directed at @Dave_Eby and all the @bcndp MLA’s and the different municipalities in British Columbia. Some of the municipalities have opted out from the STRAA , Tofino just recently. I am going to attempt my very best to simplify my reasons why this act needs to be addressed, especially now that the tariffs by the Trump administration go into effect immediately. We knew it was coming and now it is here.
The immediate effects are the markets are plunging, the the Dow Jones plummeted 1500 points and the Nasdaq falling 5%. This is not good but is probably going to get worse when the other countries impose their reciprocal tariffs.
The point I am trying to get across to the local governments, who are using that phrase “Elbows up” I agree 100% let’s try our utmost to support the local economies where we can. So having said that, and I won’t beat about the bush. Give those hard working British Columbians their rights back to run their Legal businesses , that they have worked very hard for, instead of supporting big American corporations that own most of the hotel chains in British Columbian. I hope I am making sense, because facts are facts no matter which way you look at them.

@BCGovNews It’s too bad that so many will visit elsewhere in Canada with the monopoly that the NDPBC Government has created with the hotels here in BC. Removal of legal STRs was a travesty.
If all these politicians are going “elbows up” it’s about time they revisited laws governing STR’s, especially the legal ones. The ones that were purposely built and zoned for short term rentals. They far too small to be used for LTR . With all what’s happening with the tariff wars and asking Canadians to reconsider holidaying in America, to stay in Canada and support the local economy. Also we need alternatives to the hotels that are predominantly owned by American corporations, and with FIFA just around the corner, we need to offer the millions of fans traveling to this part of the world alternative places to stay
@KahlonRav But you confiscated acquired zoning rights from legally operating STRs in select tourist zones established by a few Municipalities. This has resulted in severe financial hardship to small business owners and nowhere to stay except price gouging US-owned hotels! Change this now!
@Anvil1965@mymaats@HarmanBhanguBC@KahlonRav Don’t be such a dick. They are not parasites. They are hardworking people trying to make a living just like everyone else. Many who were trying to make this their retirement plan.
When you took action on STR’s you did not differentiate between the legal and non legal ones. You only telling one side of the story. You have taken away the businesses of hard working middle class British Columbians, some of which have gone bankrupt and a lot are struggling to survive. Also because most of the legal ones were specially zoned in commercial spaces, not urban, very small and special built to serve tourists . As a result tourism has suffered. Do you have the figures of how much tourism was down and how many businesses relying in tourism have closed and restaurants are struggling? You also have given the monopolies to the hotels, which most are owned by American companies, great mistake team Canada. Aren’t you promoting buy Canada support Canadians? What a Great War lord you have turned out to be
@PropertyRtsBC@JohnRustad4BC@Dave_Eby@elenoresturko@Bzubyk@Adam_Stirling@VoteYYJWilliams@koicows
Yes that’s exactly what is happening. No compensation, no discussion. Guess what @KahlonRav brother is in the construction business. Guess who will be getting all the contracts and who will be getting the kickbacks? We need a DOGE in BC
@elonmusk we need your help when you finish the American corruption
Trying to wrap my head around whats happening. Since September the B.C. legislature has not been in session. After a very tight win, the @bcndp just scraped through. Then @Dave_Eby gives all the elected BCNDP’s a 50% pay increase and an extended holiday, this is happening while @realDonaldTrump is imposing all these tariffs on Canada, granted we got a 30 day reprieve. Instead on calling on an emergency they do nothing. Go figure. The same is happening with the federal government, we don’t have a government at the moment. Since Trump became president, he has been working non stop , whereas Canada had been idle for the past 4 months, If this is indication to go by, we in serious trouble and we should be calling for an immediate election.
Can you believe this is actually happening?

Dear Premier Eby and Minister Kahlon
I am writing to express my concern regarding the apparent contradiction between calls for Canadians to support British Columbia businesses in the face of US tariffs and the recent restrictions placed on short-term rentals (STRs) in the province.
While we understand the need to stand united against unfair trade practices, it is difficult to reconcile this with the fact that many Canadians who invested in their communities and legally operated STRs have had their property rights effectively taken away. These individuals made significant investments based on existing regulations, and now find their livelihoods impacted by changes that seem to disproportionately benefit large, often American-owned, hotel chains.
The elimination of STRs appears to have created a de facto monopoly for these hotel chains, which have, predictably, responded by raising their room rates. It's worth noting that many of these hotels, such as Days Inn, Doubletree, Marriott, Quality Inn, Best Western, Delta (Ocean Point), Holiday Inn, and Four Points by Sheraton, are American-owned. This situation raises serious questions about whose interests are truly being served.
How can Canadians be expected to support BC businesses when provincial policies appear to prioritize American corporations over Canadian property owners? It creates a sense of unfairness and makes it challenging to rally behind calls for national solidarity against US tariffs. A more equitable approach that respects the rights of Canadian investors and fosters a level playing field is essential if we are to present a united front against external pressures.
I urge your readers to consider the impact of these policies and explore solutions that both address the issue of US tariffs and support the rights and livelihoods of Canadian citizens.

@dave_eby, in case you are unaware, but all the hotels in BC are owned by mostly American companies. How dare you tell us not to support American. You and you government passed bill 35 sec 36, taking away the rights of hard working British Columbians to run their LEGAL, zoned Airbnb’s. How dare you tell us not to support American companies, when you are the one that has supported them at our expense. What a hypocrite you and @bcndp are. Could you please explain this to your electorate. This is outrageous. Maybe you should make a plea to everyone coming to B.C. not to stay in hotels owned by American corporations.
@Dave_Eby@KahlonRav@bcndp@JohnRustad4BC@Conservative_BC@elenoresturko@Bzubyk@Adam_Stirling@ryanlpainter@VoteYYJWilliams@timthielmann@PropertyRtsBC@VoteYYJWilliams@koicows
How dare @Dave_Eby stand up and give a talk about how they going to help small businesses thrive and the importance of small businesses to the economy. He promises he is going to prioritize building a stronger economy in the province. Another promise, I have heard it all before.
He took away the rights of hundreds if not thousands of legal Short term rentals businesses to operate as a business. They were zoned and grandfathered in to run as a legitimate business. They paid for their business license, paid their taxes, employed people .Today a lot of these businesses owners have gone bankrupt. They did nothing wrong and it wasn’t their fault. We now hearing of the large hotel corporations building STR’s in their hotels.
In any free economy people are allowed to choose what business they would like to run and these STR’s were their businesses.
Nothing is making sense . Investors are cautious if this is what the government can do. Investors beware

Brilliant article, beautifully written so relevant. With all the promises made by the @bcndp , I look forward to seeing how they will manage. These promises made, will cost lots of money, and how will he get the money??He has already stolen from hard working British https://t.co/yc0z6Be7Qq the next few years, we will have a lot of the 24 to 45 year olds leave this province for greener pastures and better opportunities.
Maybe it’s a good thing he got in, cause he has promised to fix up his mistakes. And it’s going to cost. By the way when can I expect my $1000 you promised?
@JohnRustad4BC@Dave_Eby@Adam_Stirling@bcndp@Conservative_BC@VoteYYJWilliams@koicows@AllyC1000
Needless to say all the behind closed door meetings with the hotel association and making them all sign a NDA . Soon after all STR’s were not allowed to operate as what they had been promised by the municipalities. Hotels now had a monopoly. They based their decisions on a so called housing shortage, which is furthest from the truth. Since the law went into effect, data has shown that it has had no impact on the market at all
If only @Dave_Eby and @KahlonRav had not rushed into making rash decisions. Being lobbied by the hotel association to close all STR’s . If only they had looked at data and had done some calculations, they should have closed all illegal ones and let the legal ones carry on business. The difference would have been so negligible. Most times you should look before you leap, and not make rash decisions. This decision has had a lot of impact and ruined the lives of thousands of hard working, honest British Columbians, and who benifits,
@Dave_Eby corporate share holders in hotel chains. Tourism has also been impacted as has a lot of businesses relying on tourism, just ask the whale watching companies.
It’s come back to bite them
The people have spoken you need to do a lot better
