U.S. and Ecuador Sink Drug Trafficking Refueling Vessel

On September 2, 2026, U.S. and Ecuadorian forces interdicted and sank a vessel used as a floating refueling station for illicit drug trafficking in international waters of the Eastern Pacific.

The operation, directed by SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan and carried out by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, targeted a vessel linked by intelligence to Ecuador’s Los Choneros organization. Marines and sailors launched from USS San Antonio boarded, searched, and cleared it without incident. Occupants were transferred to Ecuadorian authorities before U.S. forces sank the ship.

SOUTHCOM said the action removed a key logistics node supporting at-sea drug operations and advanced efforts by the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition to disrupt narco-terrorist networks. Donovan described it as decisive action against sophisticated trafficking logistics. This follows a similar interdiction on August 28.
