One of the biggest issues with a lot his advice is it's not transferrable to all situations, especially outliers like this. And folks who presumably have something like 22+ years of college don't understand basic budgeting and call in and take him seriously.
He's not wrong, per se, it's just too generic of advice.
@ListClose@FinancialPhys If there is a buyer willing to pay X, and a willing seller willing to accept X - what exactly is the appraiser doing? I get it mechanically, but that is an arms length market price, that for whatever reason can be ignored because the bank says so? It's very odd.
@iceberge80@Batenswytch I think it's something else. We have a empathy crisis. Where no one can imagine being in someone else's shoes anymore. It's all "me first". It's really disheartening/
@d2fl@ashleyschendel 100% agree. I work in the legal industry, where high incomes are the norm for many, and lifestyle inflation is absolutely the biggest issue many folks face.
@PelicMikepelic@ashleyschendel Iโve always wanted to try garlic. But Iโm way far south and the timing for planting and overwintering. I can never quite figure out. Seemed a little too advanced for me! Hope yours turn out awesome!
@ashleyschendel I'm trying to figure out if they are still growing or not (first time growing onions). They are white sweet onions, so I think I'll sautรฉ them for some sort of protein (likely steak!)
@ashleyschendel Not sure how parking lots are up there, but ours mostly all let you pull through. So I'll drive right into a spot, so that I am facing out when I'm ready to leave. Even still people aren't pulling all the way in or they're backing into spots. It's nuts.
@SamFuller60@FiredUpCoug Sorry, that wasn't a dig on the city! I just meant that example of the lightrail not going to the airport, the highways not connecting to other major cities (like Houston - where I am), and the chaos of having the state government in the city (as they're constantly at odds now.)
@rolloqtomasi@FiredUpCoug Ask yourself why you think anything needs to be ran at a profit. Especially in a world rapidly advancing to a point where your labor may no longer be needed.
@OGMetacognition@FiredUpCoug But if you're not convinced by Amtrak, look at Richard Branson's rail project connecting the cities in Florida. I think it's called Brightline.
Amtrak is a hybrid of two very different things. Like NEC Amtrak is faster and probably on par as far as cost goes for routes from DC to/inbetween Boston. Boston to Chicago or really any other route doesn't make sense for that. That purpose is for people who like trains, not speed.
Thanks @grok - are you able to guess what the operating profit would be if Amtrak were to expand to include high speed rail between Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin?
Note, there is no real direct interstate highway that connections Houston and Austin (but rather is a four lane road with stop lights for most of the distance).
@SamFuller60@FiredUpCoug For sure, it's Dallas after all, but they have a functioning light rail that connects one of their airports to downtown! That's more than can be said for many American cities.
Houston's solution at one point was to have a commercial flight between the two airports...
Oil companies worked hard to dismantle rail in and around Texas. 100 years later, Houston with a metro population of almost 8,000,000 people has no rail connecting it's two airports to it's three "downtowns" (downtown, galleria and medical center) or to close by cities like Galveston.
Dallas voters went the opposite way, and voted to fund their lightrail entirely themselves in the 80's. (DART is the largest system by mileage in the US.)
