We built the boring version of a production setup: a MySQL source, a replica, and two ProxySQL nodes in cluster mode. Then we gave it a report query that costs 106 ms to see how much work it is to put a highly available cache behind just that query.

It came to two docker run commands and two INSERT statements in ProxySQL. Nothing in the application changed, and neither did the schema or MySQL’s configuration. That one query went from 106 ms to 0.716 ms.

The rewrite you always ask about? We measured it too. The optimized version runs in 88 ms, while Readyset brings it to 0.716 ms on the same hardware.

This weekend, I was at the @Oracle office in São Paulo to talk about how ACID, PostgreSQL, and Readyset relate.

The idea is simple, if you have a 1000 QPS on a table that is part of your select and this query takes 10 seconds to run, by the time the query finishes you lost 10000 possible updates on it. With Readyset, we can in certain scenarios, provide more up-to-date data. Or we can provide the same data with a fraction of the hardware cost.
