I can’t even imagine how Arvind Kejriwal and his sponsored cockroaches will respond to this.

Government schools cannot be transformed merely by building more classrooms. The real challenge is improving what happens inside the classroom.

The Modi government has undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of school education:

• NEP 2020 : shifted the focus from rote learning to foundational literacy, competency-based and experiential learning, critical thinking and holistic development.

• PM SHRI Schools : government and government-aided schools are being developed as exemplar schools aligned with NEP, with better infrastructure, smart classrooms, labs, libraries, sports facilities and modern pedagogy. More than 13,000 schools have been selected under the programme.

• NIPUN Bharat : a national mission to ensure that children acquire foundational literacy and numeracy in the early years, because a child who cannot read, write or do basic mathematics cannot progress meaningfully through school.

• Samagra Shiksha : an integrated school-education programme covering pre-school to Class XII, supporting infrastructure, libraries, sports, inclusive education, digital learning, vocational education, teacher training and learning improvement.

• Teacher training : NISHTHA provides structured professional development for teachers, head teachers and school leaders, while SCERTs and DIETs are being strengthened to improve teacher education.

• Digital education : DIKSHA, PM e-VIDYA, digital classrooms and other technology-enabled platforms have expanded access to quality learning material beyond the physical classroom.

• Data-driven monitoring : National Achievement Surveys, Performance Grading Index, UDISE+ and Vidya Samiksha Kendras are being used to track learning outcomes, identify gaps and enable evidence-based interventions.

• Better infrastructure : support is being provided for classrooms, toilets, drinking water, electricity, libraries, ICT and digital classrooms, based on identified gaps in schools.

• Inclusion and retention : free textbooks and uniforms, support for children with special needs, girls’ hostels, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and measures for children at risk of dropping out are part of the broader effort to keep children in school.

And there are measurable signs of progress.

Learning outcomes, particularly foundational literacy and numeracy, have improved significantly, with government schools showing greater gains than private schools during 2022–24.

The Modi government’s approach is therefore not simply about more schools.

It is about better schools, better teachers, better infrastructure, better technology and, most importantly, better learning outcomes.

For millions of children who depend on government schools, that is what real educational reform looks like.
