For years robotics has been showing us expensive machines doing impressive things behind ropes, inside factories or in suspiciously perfect demos.
Then someone puts a beak on a small robot, charges $399 and suddenly people want one in the house.
I laughed at it first.
Then I got annoyed that THIS might actually be what cracks consumer robotics.
Then I started thinking about what I would teach it.
That may be the whole point.
People buy the toy, teach it something stupid, upload the behavior, copy what someone else made, and suddenly a lot of people are tinkering with real robots at home.
Necessary? Absolutely not.
Do I want one?
Annoyingly, yes.
Maybe robotics does not enter the home when robots become essential.
Maybe it enters when they become impossible to resist.

I get why these competitions exist, because engineers need robots to fail before they can make them better. What makes me laugh is the hype around it. After every tournament, one decent kick gets reposted like humans are finished, while the rest looks like the world’s most expensive amateur football league with human tech support on standby.
For the price of a small fortune, we have robots that can occasionally score a goal but still struggle with the messy part that actually matters: falling, recovering, adapting when something goes wrong and continuing without someone running onto the field to save them.
That is where RELIABILITY matters more than another viral highlight.
I do not care if a humanoid looks amazing for ten seconds. I care whether it can keep working when reality stops cooperating.
This is not criticism of robots. The engineering is impressive. It is criticism of the ridiculous HYPE that treats every successful demo like the revolution has already arrived.

At what point does “AI teammate” become a polite way of saying: WE DON’T NEED TO HIRE YOU ANYMORE?
The upside is real. Grok Bot can work across apps, keep context and turn repeated workflows into reusable skills. That can kill boring routine and let small teams take on far more work without hiring for every repetitive task.
But one human + 10 agents doesn’t automatically mean nine layoffs. Agents still make mistakes, break on edge cases and need supervision.
