If you want to try growing your own strawberries, good for you! If you want to buy them from someone you trust, buy local. Hit up your farmers market, local food distributor. Any questions, let me know! Please no hate/controversy. Iโm a busy farmer- no time for that ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ
For the new followers who are here for the strawberries. My husband and I are new to growing them. We planted 1k plants in 2020, 2k in 2021, and plan on planting 2k in 2022. This is still a very small patch farming-wise but Iโll try to give you tips ๐
There are two types of strawberries. Day Neutral or everbearing where they fruit June through October (northern US climate) and June bearing which only fruit in June. These seasons may be totally different in other parts of the US and definitely the world. 2/?
We donโt really do much besides that and weed control. Hand weeding is our preference over herbicides and we just deal with bugs lol. I know many of you want organic but I say, buy local. Connect with whoever grew your food and ask questions. They will be happy to talk to you.
4- cover them for winter. We use clean straw (without seeds and never hay because it has seeds). Trust me. We do this in Nov.
5- uncover in April but be prepared to use fabric row cover on frosty nights. esp when plants are blooming.
6- natural pollinators. We โค๏ธ bees.
1- go to your Land Grant University for help/resources on their websites. For us in NY that is Cornell U. They have pages on insects, diseases, varieties to choose, etc for our area
2- pick off blossoms first year after planting to get your plants established
3- fertilize 5/?
If you are ok with all berries in June (freeze them!) go with the junebearing. Thatโs what we have and know better. For us, itโs been a lot trial and error. We are a small family farm without employees so itโs me and my husband planting, weeding, fertilizing, pickingโฆ 4/?
If you grow everbearing, you wonโt get a lot of berries at one time. But youโll have fruit longer. You may want to plant more of them to get enough for making jam, pie, or shortcake at a time. Iโd say this is what most home gardeners use. 3/?
@therealgeech Oh I wish! America wants cheap food. And thatโs not a political statement. I just mean that farmers make next to nothing for their hard work.
Woke up to both my first viral twitter post (not writing related, of course) and a form query rejection from one of my A+ agents. The new followers and kind words I received yesterday kinda softened the blow. ๐ #WritingCommunity
@EmmaCohan I pulled my ponytail holder out and shook my hair. Then ran. Whatโs worse? Another bee buzzed around my head again 15 mins later. Pheromones? I ran so fast!!
@ChrisE97th Iโm so sorry! I always looked forward to strawberry season. Growing up, my mom made strawberry shortcake and weโd only get that dessert a few times in June. It had to tide us over until the next year.
