Marines on D-DAY
#OTD, Allied forces launched the D-Day invasion of Normandy, a decisive turning point in World War II. Though frequently overshadowed by the Pacific campaign, the Marine Corps made vital contributions to this monumental assault.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the majority of Marines were deployed to the Pacific. However, specialized cadres remained to provide crucial amphibious warfare expertise to Allied forces in Europe for the duration of the war. These amphibious trainings would eventually make significant contributions to major amphibious assaults throughout the European Theater of Operations, including Operation Torch in North Africa in 1942, Operation Husky in Sicily in 1943, and Operation Overlord in 1944.
Beginning in 1942, numerous Marines were embedded with Allied command staffs to advise on and coordinate major amphibious landings. Key figures like Col. Robert O. Bare served as leading strategists for naval gunfire and training and went ashore on D-Day itself. Marines actively supported the grueling assault on Omaha Beach, manning the 5-inch guns off warships like the USS Texas to provide critical fire support for the troops storming ashore.
Other Marines scanned the skies above while manning anti-aircraft guns ensuring the German air force was kept at bay. In total a little over 800 Marines participated in Operation Overlord on D-Day with approximately a squad of Marines landing on Omaha Beach itself, helping to transport the wounded and captured prisoners of war, and coordinate fires for the USS Texas’s 14-inch heavy guns.

The @CommunityNotes on this is misleading by not stating the whole truth. If you get serve 1 year and a day in prison, and have 5 years probation after that, your sentence is 6 years and a day. Which the day would he in the 7th year of your sentence.
🚨 WTF?! President Trump just revealed he PARDONED a man who was sentenced to SEVEN YEARS in federal prison for fixing his OWN truck or tractor
"The Democrats have a restriction that if you get caught fixing your tractor, they bring you to JAIL. Did you know that?!"
"I pardoned a man last week who was sentenced to SEVEN YEARS in jail because he got caught fixing his car or truck."
"I said, 'what did he do?' 'He was fixing his truck!'
I said, 'how long is he getting? '7 years'
I said, 'say it again!' It's the first time I've ever heard it...
I gave him a pardon because he had to go to JAIL because he was fixing HIS tractor or his truck. So I promise.. if you ever get caught fixing your tractor or truck, I will give you a pardon, OK?"
Looney democrat regulation strikes again...
@nolelifestyle I agree. And I’ll tell you who’s missing from HIGH on this board, Arkansas fans. You ever met one? They think their “Hawgs” and them selves as fans are Gods gift to football and somehow they’ll magically be good. And until recent success, you’d find UGA HiGH on this board too
End of an Era: The Marine Corps Says Farewell to the Legendary AV-8B Harrier Jump Jet Yesterday, on June 3, 2026, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, the U.S. Marine Corps held a heartfelt “Sundown Ceremony” for the AV-8B Harrier II — the iconic “Jump Jet” that defined Marine aviation for over 40 years. VMA-223 “Bulldogs,” the last operational Harrier squadron, led the final salute with a five-ship formation flyover before touching down for the last time.
Few aircraft captured the imagination like the Harrier. With its revolutionary vectored thrust nozzles, it could take off and land vertically from amphibious ships, short makeshift runways, or forward austere bases where no other fast jet could operate. That unique capability made it the ultimate close air support platform for Marines on the ground — delivering precision strikes exactly when and where they were needed. From the skies over Desert Storm, through Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, to later fights against ISIS and beyond, the AV-8B racked up thousands of combat sorties. It proved time and again that flexibility and toughness win battles.
Now the Harrier makes way for the F-35B Lightning II, which brings stealth, sensor fusion, and next-generation capabilities while preserving that critical STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing) mission the Marines pioneered. The skills, tactics, and institutional knowledge built over decades of Harrier operations will live on in the new jet. To every Marine who maintained, flew, and fought in the Harrier: thank you. You operated one of the most demanding, distinctive aircraft ever built — and you did it with excellence. The roar of those Pegasus engines may have faded at Cherry Point, but the legend of the Jump Jet never will.

You just won a 2-week, all-expenses-paid vacation to Florida. But there’s a catch: you have to stay within one region the whole time. What are you picking?
@yannispappas My wife had to do the same at a hotel pool a couple years ago, the kids mom and her friend/cousin just weren’t paying attention to the kid who was way too young to be in the pool by himself. The mom wouldn’t jump in either so my wife jumped in with all her clothes on to grab him
“Retreat? Hell, We Just Got Here!”
Today, we remember the legacy of Marines who fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, helping to cement the Corps' reputation as the world's premier fighting force.
During the intense battle, the 4th Marine Brigade, comprised of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, fought aggressively through the wheat fields and woodlands in France, helping to stop a major German advance toward Paris in 1918. The Battle of Belleau Wood became a major turning point for the Corps, providing Marines with experience in large scale operations.
Legend has it that Marines were later called Teufel Hunden ("Devil Dogs" in German) due to the relentless tenacity while taking enemy positions during the battle. Because of the Marines’ unwavering commitment, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments were awarded the French Croix de Guerre, an award presented to individuals or units for acts of valor and bravery on the battlefield.
