Our countdown to America250 continues! 🇺🇸 Each Friday, we’re highlighting key moments in Greensboro’s history leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.
This week’s highlight️: Founded on March 9, 1891, as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, NC A&T was North Carolina’s first public institution for African American students. 🎓Originally located in Raleigh with just 37 students, the school moved to Greensboro in 1893 after local leaders contributed $11,000 and 14 acres of land.
Renamed several times over the years, it became North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University when it joined the University of North Carolina System in 1971. Today, NC A&T is the nation’s largest HBCU, the most affordable doctoral research university in the US, and the top producer of Black STEM graduates.
