My biggest question is how does Sony think they can convert the remaining 50% who still buy physical to digital. They might save money on not having to print discs, but the people at home buying physical will just save money by not buying PlayStation products.
Video games are a luxury item, not a necessity. I feel the biggest consequence this will have is that people reevaluating their purchasing habits.
Cause I know I aint buying a PS6 or a single PlayStation game after January 2028.
Imagine if Pokemon came out and said they are going to stop physical production of their trading cards and then says you can still collect them in the TCGP app.
And then follows up by saying they don't understand what the big issue is.
No disc 💿 no buy
Okay, so, why weren't games made cheaper when they slowed disc production as digital sales outgrew them?
Better yet, why didn't prices fall when micro transactions in full priced games exponentially eclipsed single sale profitability?
These people think you're cattle.
I don't like hating. For me it isn't a sport but in this case I have to agree. GTA 6 needs to fail. It will not happen but it needs to happen.
Two scenarios:
1) It fails=gaming is safe.
2) It succeeds=triple A games now cost $80+ and we own nothing.
Hear me out:
Sony and Rockstar are conspiring together to not only kill the secondhand market, but kill game discs and jack the standard base game price up to and maybe even over $100 to make more money.
This all feels waaay too close together to be a coincidence to me.
