Özellikle Rodos başta olmak üzere, askerî statüsü uluslararası antlaşmalarla düzenlenmiş adaların silahlandırılması iddiaları, ilgili antlaşmaların hükümleri çerçevesinde dikkatle incelenmelidir. Türkiye, söz konusu düzenlemelerin ihlal edildiğini düşünmesi hâlinde, diplomatik girişimler, uluslararası hukuk mekanizmaları ve gerekli görülen diğer güvenlik tedbirleri aracılığıyla kendi güvenlik çıkarlarını koruma hakkına sahiptir.

Yunanistan’ın güvenlik ve savunma gerekçeleriyle ileri sürdüğü meşru çıkarlar bulunduğu gibi, Türkiye’nin de ulusal güvenliğini ve toprak bütünlüğünü korumaya yönelik meşru güvenlik kaygıları bulunmaktadır. Bununla birlikte, bölgedeki gerilimin askerî çatışmaya dönüşmesini önlemek açısından önceliğin diplomatik ve hukuki mekanizmalara verilmesi; askerî tedbirlerin ise uluslararası hukuk, orantılılık ve gereklilik ilkeleri çerçevesinde değerlendirilmesi daha uygun olacaktır.

Sonuç olarak Türkiye’nin, Ege adalarının askerî statüsüne ilişkin gelişmelere karşı pasif bir tutum sergilemek yerine, uluslararası hukuk temelinde kararlı ve çok boyutlu bir politika yürütmesi; herhangi bir yeni askerî yapılanmanın veya silahlandırma faaliyetinin Türkiye’nin güvenliğine yönelik etkilerini kapsamlı biçimde değerlendirmesi gerekmektedir.
