GREEN COVE 💵🐬💵, RED COVE 🩸🐬🩸

A pod of over 20 short-finned pilot whales were driven into the Cove yesterday with 4 days left in the hunting season, and kept overnight. Hunters and dolphin trainers arrived at the Cove in the early morning hours, and although the pilot whale hunting which lasts until the end of April, has been regarded for food, unusually 1 captive was taken to the harbor.

This year’s quota for short-finned pilot whales is 101. The catch quotas set by the Fisheries Agency are the upper limit for capturing alive and kills combined, and the breakdown is left to on-site judgment, so I guess this is possible.

The Wakayama Prefectural Government and the national government are eager to manipulate impressions by claiming that this hunting is traditional and cultural, but the main purpose of this hunting is to “sell live dolphins” to aquariums and other facilities that make money by forcing wild-caught dolphins to perform acrobatic tricks and by providing services called “petting services”. This is a clear example of the main purpose of this industry.

The Taiji dolphin drive hunting (for 6 months) and its extension, the pilot whale hunting (for 2 months), depend on 80% of the profits from the sale of captured dolphin alive. Please realize that this is a modern dolphin sales business, started in 1969.

Usually, after the captives are selected by the trainers, the remaining pod is subject to killing for consumption. 12 were killed today. In particular, it seemed the ones have large bodies like the matriarch, had been targeted.

The group that was first sorted by the net and left behind included several individuals marked with white paint on their backs. The group, which had been left at the Cove while hunters butchered 12 whales into pieces at the slaughterhouse in the harbor, was released into the ocean at 4:30 p.m. It is assumed that they are mainly juveniles or immature ones, but it is not known if they have been separated from their mothers, i.e., if they are not orphans whose mothers were kidnapped or killed.

The release would have been set up in the same way as the hunters would have driven the rest of the pod out to the ocean when they had finished butchering all of them, but it is unclear if the butchering of the 12 large-bodied whales had been completed at this time. This clearly appears to be too many killings for the low demand in light of the sales of whale meat and dolphin/small whale meat at the only supermarket in Taiji Town.

In other words, dolphins are killed for food whether there is demand or not, is similar to the whaling by “Kangei Maru”. Dolphins are being killed for nothing but interests and profits.
