🦶 Is it illegal to drive barefoot in Ontario?
No, but that doesn’t mean you should!
During the October 6, 2026, #ASKaTrafficCOP livestream, I was asked whether driving barefoot was against the law.
I explained why driving without shoes creates risks that many people never consider.
What happens when you need to brake suddenly?
What happens if you’re involved in a collision and need to escape your vehicle?
Sometimes what’s legal isn’t what’s safest.

There are terribly missed, never forgotten😢 They paid the ultimate price in service for their community and policing has never been the same. They touched everyone who met them from Bradford to Barrie. This was a huge loss, still is. RIP brothers.

I have attended far too many police funerals over the past few months. I have also made far too many visits to hospitals to see members recovering from injuries suffered in the line of duty.
These experiences stay with you. They are a reminder that behind every headline is a person, a family, a colleague, and a community affected by violence.
Last week in Ottawa, I participated in a Roundtable on Officer Safety alongside police service and association leaders from across Canada. Police services across the country are concerned about assaults, threats, and violence directed at officers.
Many of us signed the letter below because we need to have an open conversation about this. I want to thank the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police @CACP_ACCP, the Canadian Police Association, and Premier Ford @fordnation for helping bring attention to this issue and for advocating for the safety of our officers.
An attack on a police officer is an attack on all of us as a society. It is an attack on the rule of law, on our values, and on our way of life. It is also an attack on what makes our cities vibrant and thriving. This is an issue across our country. Public safety is the foundation on which strong communities and economic prosperity are built.
A society that does not take meaningful action to prevent violence against its police officers cannot claim to be at its best. Keeping officers safe is not solely a policing issue. It is a responsibility shared by all of us: police services, legislators, educators, parents, healthcare partners, the justice system, and community leaders.
The @TorontoPolice Service will continue working with all of our partners to address this issue. We support the efforts to send a clear message that violence against those who serve and protect our communities, or against anyone, is unacceptable.
It’s a foggy morning, visibility is reduced, and drivers should already be slowing down and using extra caution.
Then I watched a driver blow through a stop sign directly in front of the crosswalk I was about to use, with a crossing guard standing right there.
They ran the stop sign, pulled over, dropped their child off at school, then let their dog out for a pee.
Seriously?
And on the walk back, I passed another dad pulling over to drop his kiddo off at school late.
Guess why he was driving with only one hand?
Yep. Phone in the other one.
If you ever want to be horrified by driver behaviour, spend some time near a school during drop-off or pickup. You will see some of the worst driving imaginable.
These are supposed to be among our safest streets because this is where some of the most important people are, our children.
Slow down. Stop at stop signs. Put the phone away. Pay attention. And on a foggy morning like this, give yourself even more time and space.
My name is Sean Shapiro. I’m a former police officer who talks about traffic safety, traffic law and police stuff.

@GregLehman@reallyrede No matter how much enforcement we have people tend to revert to entitlement and convenience the moment the police car isn’t there. We sadly need constant enforcement in these areas in order to ensure safety and compliance.
🔐 FROM THE VAULT
We’re opening the vault and bringing back some of my favourite videos from over the years.
This one is from 2021 and went on to reach more than 6 million views. It starts with a stitched clip showing just how dramatic dark window tint can be. With the window up, it looks almost like nighttime. Drop the window, and suddenly it is clearly daytime.
It is a great visual reminder of the problem with excessively dark tint. If visibility is that reduced during the day, imagine the impact at night, especially when trying to see pedestrians, cyclists, road hazards, or anything else outside the vehicle.
This video was originally filmed while I was a member of the Toronto Police Service. I retired from policing in 2024 and am no longer a police officer. Any references in the original video to me being a police officer reflect my status at the time it was recorded.
