AI can make mistakes, but are you actually reviewing your AI-generated content?

If you don't review AI-generated text or code, there is a high chance it will contain inaccuracies. Once published, it goes straight into the ocean of public data on the internet, mixing permanently with human-generated content.

As we use AI more and more in our content pipelines, people are increasingly publishing unreviewed AI content. This is steadily increasing the overall inaccuracy of data on the internet, and in the future, it is only going to get worse.

AI-generated images and videos are already being marked, but those markers are often removed by users. We have inaudible watermarks for sound, but text and code are difficult to mark reliably. You can use AI content detection models, but they aren't always accurate and add friction. Before, it was all human-generated content, so companies and startups training AI models didn't need to filter any data. Year-wise filtering won't give you complete data because people update their old content. Archives might be helpful, but that also adds friction. Furthermore, content is often partially human-written, making it even more difficult to filter. Human and AI text is already mixing everywhere.

While we are currently able to recognize most AI-generated videos and images because of subtle differences from human content, we still sometimes fail to identify them. Often our elders and kids are unable to recognize AI-generated content. As the technology improves, our ability to differentiate won't make much of a difference. The ability of future generations to tell the difference will decrease even further, becoming worse than ours, as their eyes and ears will be trained on more AI-generated content than human-generated. It is entirely possible that these inaccuracies will simply be perceived as truth in the future.

The more we are able to keep human-generated data intact, the more we ensure the availability of accurate data for future generations. It reminds me of that communication game or telephone game where people stand in a line and a person has to repeat the action or words of the previous one. By the time it reaches the end, the action is completely different. Small inaccuracies compound heavily.

The problem is not AI-generated content itself. The problem is purely AI-generated content published without putting any thought into it. The problem is unreviewed AI-generated content mixing with human-generated content. Unreviewed content does not reflect your own thoughts and carries hidden inaccuracies, which is the root cause of the degrading internet data. At the same time, the fresh supply of human-generated content is halting, as the incentive to create it (organic traffic and ad revenue) is decreasing day by day.

We can't ignore AI, knowing how useful it is right now. But we must make sure any content we produce is reviewed or marked before publishing.
