I haven't talked about @sorarenba for a long time, and unfortunately, not much has happened there in the last few months. However, this is not intended to be a whine post; instead, I would like to share a few ideas that, in my opinion, would greatly improve Sorare NBA, and perhaps @ni2las will see the post.

Creating initiatives to encourage advancement

Problem: The current status quo is that it's smartest to only play limited. As a result, not only do most users sell their rare and SR galleries at super low prices, but also, hardly anyone advances.

Example: The screen illustrates it quite well:

Second place in the rare contender wins a card worth €150, while fifth place in the limited contender wins a card that is 30% more valuable and costs over $200. Additionally, it's much easier to win rewards in limited. For example, this was my rare champ team last GW:

didn't win any card reward, and in limited, it would easily have been a tier 2 or tier 3. That doesn't make sense, does it?

Solution: Unpopular opinion, many won't like the idea, but it would be the best hot fix... Divide prize pools into t0 and t1. ~4 players are in the t0 pool. Luka, Jokic, Wemby, Giannis. T0 limiteds can only be won in rare and t0 rares can only be won in SR. This completely changes the dynamics, people will want to advance, invest more money again, rares and SRs will be much more valuable, and the prices can be replaced with t3-t4 rares and SRs, making it easier to rise to higher leagues. Progress is key.

Template teams
Most teams look similar. I started with a core of 4 players and had literally just 1 pick left:

5 players for NBA is just too few and it's boring. 7? 8? even more? Would be a good way not only to stabilize prices but also to bring more fun, skill, and variance.
Multi-entry, 3 max is also an important point to consider.

Tournament Structure
In general, the structure with Champ, Contender, and X is wrong for NBA. It should be completely revamped and become more similar to fantasy sports products. I'm happy to share some details on this too because I have some ideas, but that's more of a topic for S3.

But it's just a shame that we had almost 300 entries in SR contender 12 months ago, and now, with five times the supply and much lower card prices, we have 192 entries.
At the latest here, one should realize that something is going wrong and we need changes. Because literally for months, we've been losing entries every game week, even though the supply is increasing and prices are falling.

Marketing
I don't want to overstep my bounds here because I don't have insights or details about your marketing strategy, but what I do know is that the NBA is very popular in America and Asia, and both are markets that Sorare should target.

Moreover, both markets are very crypto-friendly and have many crypto whales. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the web2 approach is wrong, I just believe that both approaches can be pursued, and we should also focus on crypto users and bring them to Sorare. And it's really not difficult to bring the right influencers from the web3 space to Sorare.

Sorry for the long post. But I'm a big NBA fan, and in my opinion, Sorare still has the best NBA fantasy game. I want to see how you rock the space and witness millions of people playing Sorare NBA. But for that to happen, changes are needed, and I really hope they come soon🙏

Still in love with Sorare NBA, and I'm confident that things will improve. so I'll continue to provide suggestions.

The big problem is simply that we are stuck in a major negative spiral. And yet we have again, 6x Giannis limited on auctions:
There is absolutely no reason to buy now because in January the cards will be 50% cheaper, in February another 50% cheaper, and in March, it will completely collapse for teams that don't make it to the playoffs.

And please don't mistake it for ROI hunters or people wanting to get rich, but it's not enjoyable for anyone, absolutely no one, to invest €1000 and then see in February that the cards are now only worth €250. It's just not fun, and that's exactly why new users aren't joining because they know, if I'll wait a few weeks, then it's cheaper, and then I'll wait a bit longer, and it's even cheaper, and then I probably doesn't start after all because the T1 reward I could win is worth 3$.

So the only thing that helps us is to break this negative spiral and create a positive trend. Maybe even generate FOMO. Today Giannis costs €90, next week €140, and the week after €200. And this only works if we significantly reduce the number of mints and regulate the revenue through the secondary market. By the way, it is also infinitely scalable and controllable.

Concrete idea:

Reduce supply to:
100 limiteds (~ that equals 1 limited per player per week on auctions. So we would have 1 giannis action per week )
10 rares
1 sr
per day.

Increase 2nd market fee:
Increase the fee up to 15%. And I know, traders won't like it, but believe me, you'd rather pay 15% fees on a Giannis that you sell for €500 than 5% on a Giannis that no one wants to buy for €80.

It is sustainable, infinitely scalable, and there is a proof of concept with DK Reignmakers that generates incredible volume on the 2nd market and has 10% fees.

TLDR:

We dont need:
List or play
first owner bonus
xp punishment for trades
etc

We need:
highly active 2nd market
reward trading ( or at least does not punish it)
positive trend for card prices
The special feeling back of winning/buying a player and following his career

And I can only speak for Sorare NBA, but I can already guarantee you that if nothing changes, auction revenues in January compared to December will drop by at least 70%, probably more. No one is interested in that, except maybe for people who still believe that low card prices will reach the mainstream. But it won't, and we are setting the floor prices for rare and SRs so low that a bounce back will be impossible.

It's sad to see how more and more people are quitting Sorare NBA, and the mood is getting worse day by day. I don't believe spreading negativity helps anyone, so in this post, I'm trying to express constructive criticism that I believe will help Sorare NBA turn things around and move in a positive direction. After all, it is still the best NBA fantasy game out there.

What needs to change?

The primary goal must be for NBA card prices to rise. For whatever reason, it seems that Sorare assumes that if card prices are low, more users will be attracted, and mainstream can be achieved. That is not the case. Let me repeat, low prices do not attract new users but have the opposite effect.

Why do I believe this?

1) Rewards. Low card prices equal poor rewards. Take Siakam as an example, a top player. You have to be in the top 100 out of 10k players to win this card, and it's not worth even €10. About 12 months ago, the same card cost over €150. Winning a reward used to bring great joy, but being 50th out of 10k players and winning a reward worth €10 takes away the excitement and motivation.

2)Ownership. That is Sorare's unique selling proposition, to own a player, follow his career. At least for me, that's what always made Sorare special – it was always a unique and thrilling feeling to buy, trade, or win a player. I can't explain it, but it was a special, awesome feeling. And now? For €1000, I can buy every single NBA limited card. It should never have come to this.

3) Marketing and branding. Would I have ever started if I knew one of the best NBA players costs less than €100? Probably not. Does it generate hype, FOMO, or create a desire for the average fantasy player to start with Sorare NBA? Definitely not.

How to fix that?

Step1) Reduce minting.
I know this is the obvious answer, but listen to me. I know you want to build a sustainable game, but if you sell 1x Giannis limited for €1000 instead of 10x for €90, everyone benefits. Sorare and the users. So why not reduce mint speed, increase 2nd market fees to 10% or even 15%, and have an infinitely scalable revenue source? There is no fantasy sport where the 2nd market is as important as in the NBA because of the star players. When you consider cap and S2 requirements, I can guarantee you'll gain incredible traction on the 2nd market.

Step2) Mixed tournaments.
Unfortunately, I have to say it so bluntly, but you failed to balance scarcities and I dont see you fixing this soon. Especially SR feels like a scam. In the In-Season tournament, you couldn't win anything with SRs, and in SR tournaments, you can't win the good T1 cards, only T2 that no one wants. There is literally 0 demand for SR cards.

Why not make a mixed tournament your flagship? Require 3x limited, 2x rare, and 2x SR, exactly that distribution. The best rewards and prizes could be offered there.

Step3) TH.
Yes TH is not sutainable and yes I used to criticize it in football. But how about a TH that is hard to reach, let's say the top 15% on average, but you win cash credits that you can use in auctions. Unlike most, I think cash credits are a great idea because they help people get a discount when moving up to the next level. I would love to collect cash credits and then shop uniques on auctions.

Those were three spontaneous ideas. I'm eager to hear the community's feedback, and let's make NBA great again ❤️
