Egor Kornev reveals that he breathes 3-4 times in the 50 LCM Free not for air but for body positioning (translated):
"With my DPS, at a certain point I start sinking. I like to ride high on the surface like a speedboat—so before I get too low, I take a breath to rise back up."

Poor breathing skills can ruin an otherwise effective freestyle stroke.
More work for less speed.
It’s a skill swimmers have to master if they want to go fast.
Let’s take a look at how to use a snorkel to enhance freestyle breathing.
The idea here is simple.
Swim with the snorkel and feel what’s like to swim freestyle without the breath disrupting the stroke.
Then take the snorkel off and try to execute the same exact skills without the snorkel.
Rinse and repeat.
By helping swimmers FEEL the key skill, we can help them improve it.
The best part is that this strategy can be used during any type of set, without disrupting the physiological goals of the set.
Better skills and better fitness.
