Every state is watching
Every city is going to face this same question

The way this space earns long-term respect is by getting serious about it before someone else forces the issue

The debate around it reveals something bigger about where micro mobility is heading

Micromobility is in its serious phase now

The hype cycle is over

People are using e-bikes for real transportation commuting, deliveries, daily errands

That means riders, brands, cities, and lawmakers all have to operate at a higher level

Surveillance isn't safety

Every time a city can't solve a transportation problem, the answer becomes cameras, tracking, and enforcement infrastructure

That model didn't fix car culture

It won't fix e-bike culture either

The answer is better infrastructure and riders who care

Cities keep being surprised that people ride e-bikes on sidewalks

Then you look at their bike lane infrastructure and the surprise disappears

That's not rhetorical

It's the actual debate happening in state legislatures right now

People aren't buying them because they're cool

They're buying them because gas is expensive, parking is a nightmare, and short trips by car stopped making sense

That's a different product category

It deserves a different level of seriousness

The e-bike community has a responsibility problem

Not legally but culturally

If riders don't self-regulate slow near pedestrians, signal when passing, stop treating shared paths like race tracks lawmakers will do it for us

And they won't do it well

Not because safety doesn't matter but because enforcing a 10 mph rule within 50 feet of a pedestrian requires surveillance infrastructure most cities shouldn't have
