I was in Adaklu-Helekpe today, together with the Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Jerry Yao Ameko, to commiserate with families affected by yesterday’s devastating mudslide from the Adaklu Mountain.
The incident, triggered by torrential rains, struck the community at the foot of the mountain, burying at least five houses and nine vehicles, and leaving several residents displaced. It is a deeply distressing situation, and our thoughts remain with all those impacted.
We also visited some of the injured victims currently receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital (Trafalgar). In support of their recovery, we made a donation of GHS 20,000 to assist with their medical bills, as well as to support other children presently on admission at the ward.
Furthermore, I have engaged the Regional leadership of NADMO, who were on-site yesterday, to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the affected area. This exercise will help determine the safety of continued habitation and guide the necessary interventions going forward.
Government remains committed to ensuring the safety, relief, and long-term wellbeing of all affected persons.
I received the Controller and Accountant-General of Ghana, Mr. Kwasi Agyei, and his delegation during their working visit to the Volta Region.
Mr. Agyei briefed me on a number of reforms being implemented by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public financial management. These include the linking of pension and payroll databases with the National Identification Authority (NIA) and Births and Deaths Registry systems to eliminate ghost names, as well as the phased withdrawal of manual cheques in favour of electronic payments.
He also shared plans for decentralised and localised recruitment to create employment opportunities for qualified people within the regions.
I commended the Controller and Accountant-General for these reforms and encouraged staff of the department to support their successful implementation. I also welcomed the localised recruitment initiative, which will provide more opportunities for qualified residents in the Volta Region.
