Last na: my hardcore Marcos worshipping Ilokano OFW aunt softened when she found out Leni went w/ Jesse when he studied abroad.
Her words: "Ano ginawa niya dun?
This, I think, is where the "nanay" (hopefully w/ the right execution) narrative really sticks. The OFW diaspora is feminized for most Ilokanos. Grandmothers are not just loved in an Ilokano family, they are worshipped.
Leni's life story is a punch to hearts & guts of Ilokanos.
Leni must be introduced not just as VP. Humanize her as a succcessful professional, daughter, & parent.
So, yes, there is space for Ilokano conversion, but it's a process of relationship-building. Ilokano champions for Leni must introduce her w/ the right narratives. Two traits stick: husay at tibay.
The learnings we had in HK made us comfortable to do an Ilokandia tour, incl Ilocos Norte. Photos are fr Laoag & Batac: heart(beat) of Marcos country. Same comms process, same reception. In the Ilocanos we talked to, they saw Hilbay as one of their own. https://t.co/RXRk14GsEr
Recognition - inclusion - - > conversion.
Our 1st q to those we engaged: Ilokano po kayo (hello belongingness, the need to be seen)?
Pag umoo, magsasalita ako in Ilokano, ask qs, & talk of my aunts who also spent decades of their lives as DH & then ipapakilala si @fthilbay. They were v receptive & friendly.
Nanay Lydia, Pilo's mom, is fr Cagayan. Didn't make it to HS, went to Manila to work as a helper. Real story of the Pinoy diaspora. Pilo can understand Ilokano, & can speak a bit w/ the right accent. We listened to Ilokani convos + those in Tagalog but w thick accent.
We knew that a "pagpapakilala" event like that was very raw & unpredictable; v open to rejection + the bashing that can go viral. It was also midterm elex, w/ a Pres enjoying soaring popularity, w/c means his supporters are emboldened para ipahiya kami. WALANG NANGYARING GANUN.
In 2019, I went w/ @fthilbay to HK for the Otso Diretso sortie. Nagkataon din na day-off ng maraming OFWs, so we went around Central (favorite ko barung-barong sa tulay). While there were organized grps of supporters, we wanted to test: will we be able to connect w/ Ilokanos?
Friends, 'di dapat maging defensive sa achievements. That's their goal: to have us supporters erase that part of her identity, & alienate a very powerful sector.
