The urges and sensations of sexual reproduction are well known, but what about asexual? Does mitosis feel like stretching out fully for the first time after living one's whole life in a box?
Got cornered at a party by a guy arguing that Carmen Sandiego operates on a Nietzschean master morality and frankly, someone who can steal the Golden Gate Bridge and the concept of language might as well be the Übermensch.
It's usually good policy to set your science fiction stories at least a century in the future, or time will catch up to them and people will laugh at the anachronism. This one's largely pretty possible with current technology, though? Not too far off, Ray.
Hey man nice novel. Is its appeal dependent on a passing resemblance to concrete empirical realities or does it possess an allegorical significance which transcends its transient historical context?
When I feel inadequate comparing myself to other people or a future AGI, I ask: if I were the smartest, kindest, most perfect person in the world, would I want my existence to cause others to despair? And the answer is no, of course not. The bodhisattva wishes only for our joy.
The esteem in which we hold ourselves and others is based on what we can contribute to the group. This may now be an anachronistic hunter gatherer instinct, but I don't think we are going to be able to get rid of it. We'll make ourselves useless and hate ourselves for it.
I wake up, check my feed, see a post so entangled in reactionary opposition that it replicates the patterns it means to repudiate, take Weltschmerz damage, and manage one post about it before logging off.
@DiamonDie@algekalipso I'm just referring to what you say in the article: "it is sufficient to feel a lot of meditative joy/bliss and build a feedback loop around it just by really feeling into the mettā".
@DiamonDie@algekalipso It's a good article (I've never trusted authors that downplay the significance of the jhanas) but, at the risk of drifting even further away from the initial thread topic, how would you differentiate looping a thought/feeling versus concentrating on it?
@DiamonDie@algekalipso I'm not going to claim that my samatha is perfect, but I wouldn't intuitively expect that just paying attention to breath (or whatever) would be enough on its own for joy. Actively trying to generate positive emotions (through metta or otherwise), sure, but that's effortful.
