CEO: "You need to do more with less!"
Sustainability department: ๐
Sounds familiar?
Most sustainability teams are just 1 person, with huge expectations:
-> go carbon neutral by 2050
-> present at every possible event
-> fill out 87541 ESG questionnaires
But as soon as you ask for a budget? Crickets...
Here's how to go around it in 2025:
1. Craft partnerships
(amplify your impact)
2. Delegate to your colleagues
(make sustainability everyone's job)
3. Procurement is your key department
(money is already there - direct it the right way)
Sustainability at work isn't about doing more with less.
It's about working smarter with what's already there!

We need 100% of people doing small steps, every day.

2024 has been brutal for the climate.
Fixing climate is not about:
- EV cars
- plastic straws
- reusable bottles
Itโs about:
- joining a great company
- leaving a bad company
- building something
- donating
- voting
To fix climate, do what you are best at, but for the climate!

8 truths about working in sustainability:
(That nobody will tell you)
1. the salary sucks
2. people are awesome
3. the expectations are high
4. it feels like racing with time
5. shopping will never be the same
6. it's 3x more reporting than action
7. the work opportunities are everywhere
8. it doesn't feel like work. It's a passion with a purpose
Despite all of this, I am grateful for every minute.
"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
Which ones resonate the most with you?

I spent 4 years as a circular economy manager in a 2000+ people org. Here are 3 lessons I wish I knew sooner:
1. No one cares
โณ large companies have 1000 priorities
โณ circular economy is just 1 out of many
โณ It's your job to make the topic interesting, and relevant
2. Clone yourself
โณ I've started with 0, on my own, no team, no budgets
โณ Instead of spending $ on consultants, grow the team
โณ Fastest way? Inspire colleagues in other departments
3. Focus on the 80/20 rule
โณ ignore random pilots and meetings
โณ focus on large-scale systemic initiatives
โณ procurement & design are key departments for impact
Do you recognize any of these?
PS.: I coach sustainability executives on how to avoid similar mistakes, and scale circularity fast.
If you are a sustainability executive, who wants to master the circular economy in 2025, DM me "2025" and let's make it happen!

I disagree. This is a dangerous simplification.
Recycling has flaws, but itโs not pointless.
Saying that we should just landfill everything is demagogy.
Especially coming from an entrepreneur like @elonmusk who relies on recycled steel, and aluminum for his empire.
Recycling of post-consumer packaging, namely plastics, is very problematic.
Recycling of comodities like metals or paper has been working for decades, as long as we can collect it.
Letโs not mix pears with apples.
Recycling is not a silver bullet.
But it is a necessary part of keeping our resources in use for longer.
The challenge is to think bigger than that.
Circular economy is about these 4 principles:
Use less
Use longer
Use again (aka recycling)
Make clean
Whatโs your take on this?

The most sustainable gift is not what you think...
If you're like me, you're still looking for Christmas gifts.
But here's the catch: your loved ones probably already have everything they need.
There's not much they even want, not much they don't own already.
So instead of another "Scratch Off World Map", why not give experiences?
Why not a hotel night with your partner? A cooking course? A hiking trip?
Your time and attention are the most meaningful gifts you can give - and they create memories that last much longer than any object.

4 skills everyone in sustainability needs in 2025:
1. sales
2. marketing
3. public speaking
4. change management
There are tons of green experts with fancy master's degrees.
The problem is that sustainability is just one out of many topics in any organization.
You're fighting for attention, and budgets just like your sales or design team. And we all know who's winning...
So instead of another green documentary, check out:
- how to drive organizational change
- how to run a sales call
- how to communicate
- how to pitch
PS.: For the sales or marketing folks - the # 1 topic you should get on top of is sustainability ๐

This is an awesome map of all the key sustainability frameworks, standards, and milestones.
A lot is happening and a lot more to come.
This is good: what gets measured, gets managed!
My biggest wish?
Move from voluntary to compulsory reporting. And the CSRD is a clear winner in that sense.

@CocaCola's masterclass at greenwashing:
2022: 25% of beverages reusable by 2030
2024: Quietly takes the pledge away...
World's # 1 plastic polluter made a bold promise in 2022:
To have 25% of its drinks sold in refillable or returnable glass or plastic bottles, or in refillable containers.
But just days ago, the company quietly deleted the page with the pledge, and Coke no longer has a target for reuse.
Coke also cut down its recycled content pledge from 50% by 2030. Now it will "aim to use" 35% to 40% recycled material in primary packaging...
All this while we dig for more oil to make plastic, and our oceans have never been more polluted...
Don't be fooled by the shiny marketing machine.
This is a masterclass in greenwashing.
Is this a dealbreaker for you?
โป๏ธ PS.: This Saturday, I am sharing a success story of a corporate that has mastered reuse.

# 1 reason companies fail to implement circular economy?
It's in their "nice-to-have" box.
๐ "Let's have a zero-waste office."
๐ โโ๏ธ"Why don't we ban plastic bottles at our event?"
This gets you nowhere.
You want to be in the "must-have" box!
Here's how to get a buy-in at the next board meeting:
(based on 4 years of working with Prague's mayor)
1. Cut the deck from 40 slides to 2
-> most execs have a 30 sec attention span
2. Focus on systemic, large solutions
-> but suggest a small pilot to validate the idea
3. Bring the social proof
-> show how competitors are already ahead
4. Donโt just use the legal risks narrative
-> focus on $, marketing, and the ROI
5. Ask for 300% of the budget
-> you'll end up with 50% of what you need
Which one of these resonate with you?

Another climate event, another failed opportunity.
Why? ๐ฝ
UN Plastic Treaty talks crashed.
200 nations have been negotiating for 2 years.
Many hoped this would be a hallmark agreement to curb plastic pollution.
Instead, a bunch of dictatorships and petrostates get to hold humanity hostage.
Again...
To me, this shows 3 things:
1. Climate negotiations have reached a deadlock.
โก๏ธthe mechanism of these talks has to change.
โก๏ธconsensus is OK, but you can't let 3 votes block 197.
โก๏ธsince when do we negotiate with war criminals anyway?
2. The talks have never been more important
โก๏ธ We need these talks, more than ever.
โก๏ธBut let's not leave it only up to politicians and lobbyists.
3. It's up to us, folks.
โก๏ธSo many people tried to fix this at the UN Summit.
โก๏ธBut there are 100,000x solopreneurs, inventors, activists, and business leaders who are making a difference today and tomorrow.
So join us.
To fix the climate, do what you do best. But for the climate.
We may have been delayed, but we will not be stopped.

- health
- poverty
- pollution
- biodiversity
- gender equality
- resource scarcity

The sustainable certificates cheat sheet โฌ๏ธ
How many eco-labels can you really trust? ๐ค
Eco-labels are super helpful to build trust and credibility.
But there are over 450 of them, and not all are to be trusted.
This table shows many of the good ones! Some I even recommend to my clients.
If you don't know which one is best for your company:
1. Choose 1-3 max โ
- to align with your values and green initiatives
2. Do your due diligence โ
- avoid lack of transparency & lack of credible partners
3. Certificates can get expensive โ
- Pick the one that resonates the most with your audience
Most importantly: use certifications as a toolโnot the whole storyโto build trust.
The most credible brands walk the talk, and certifications are just one way to prove it.
Not the other way around.
Which one is your favorite one?
