Today, we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War was over and that all enslaved people were free.

Congratulations to Col. Trish Ross on her recognition by The Warrior Alliance. Col. Ross did a tremendous job getting VECTR started in Warner Robins and has continued to serve veterans at the next level in her new role. She's a tireless advocates for Veterans and their interests.

Last Monday I enjoyed celebrating the 21st Century Partnership and their 30th Anniversary serving our community. They do a tremendous job supporting RAFB. It was an honor to present them a proclamation celebrating their anniversary from all of the Commissioners.

Two weeks ago I was able to attend the National Security Forum at the Air War College at Maxwell AFB. It was a fun and inspiring learning opportunity where I was able to hear from top military leaders and engage with students at the War College.

On Thursday, I attended the Military Flagship School Award Ceremony at Bonaire Elementary. Each year the GDoE recognizes just a few of these schools and every year HCBE has had at least one winner. This year, among the eight schools that won, three were from Houston County.

April is the Month of the Military Child. Children of members of our armed forces face unique challenges and we are proud to support RAFB and Houston County Schools' efforts to meet their needs in creative and compassionate ways. #MOMC

Last week, I got the change to speak at Perdue Primary School about how special military kids are and what we can do to support them.

We had a few special guests at last night's meeting. The first was Pastor Joel Davis and representatives from the WR 100 Interest Group. We also had Sgt. Benji Lashley and K9 Jobi, who is one of only a few electroic detection K9s in the state and works in our Juvenile Division.

I encourage all citizens of Houston County to join in this effort by becoming aware of the signs of child abuse and neglect and advocating for our children’s safety. Let us come together to ensure our children’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Last Thursday, local leaders signed a proclamation recognizing April 2023 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Houston County. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our most vulnerable citizens.

We must work together to create a safe and secure environment for our children. It is my honor to recognize the hard work and dedication of the countless individuals and organizations who are devoted to preventing and ending child abuse in our community.
