Trump just threatened to sue Americans over their speech.

FACTS:

In the American system, a private organization is supposed to be able to:

- Criticize the president
- Publish research contradicting the government
- Appear on television and argue that a presidential policy failed
- Receive lawful donations from corporations and individuals
- Do all of that without the president threatening its financial supporters because he dislikes what it said.

The First Amendment is specifically built around protecting political speech and criticism of government.

A president using the prestige or coercive power of his office to intimidate critics or their financial supporters raises a serious chilling-effect concern even if no lawsuit ultimately succeeds.
