Restored footage captures Commander George C. Duncan's F9F Panther slamming into the edge of USS Midway's flight deck during carrier suitability tests in the Atlantic on June 23, 1951.

The jet exploded on impact, tearing apart as the forward cockpit section broke free and slid across the flight deck engulfed in flames. Against all odds, Duncan survived with only minor burns and returned to flying just six months later.
