Every notification type in FOCERA had to pass one test before shipping: can it be acted on in exactly one tap, with zero extra thinking required?
If not, we rewrote it or didn't ship it.
#ProductThinking
We were careful with social notifications in FOCERA — easy to make them a distraction instead of a nudge.
Timed them to surface between sessions, never during one. Visibility without interruption.
#ProductThinking
Early exam reminders in FOCERA just counted down days. Technically correct, practically useless — students already know the date.
Rebuilt them to surface what's unfinished instead.
#ProductThinking
Early version of the Exam Planner used one planning logic regardless of how close the exam was.
Two months out and two weeks out need genuinely different structures.
Split it into two modes.
#ProductThinking
A generic notification asks the user to make three decisions: what, where, and whether to start.
A specific one skips straight to the third.
That's the entire redesign behind Smart Notifications.
#ProductThinking
Students consistently overestimate how much of their syllabus is actually done.
Not carelessness — just hard to track 40 topics mentally. Built the Exam Planner to track it for them instead.
#ProductThinking
We almost skipped building a Leaderboard — worried it would discourage students who felt behind.
Realized the risk was in how we designed it, not in the feature existing at all.
#ProductThinking
Generic reminders get ignored. Specific ones get acted on.
FOCERA's new Smart Notifications don't say "study more" — they say what, and take you straight there.
#ProductThinking
We debated building a traditional daily streak counter into FOCERA.
Decided against it. A broken streak punishes normal life more than it rewards real consistency.

Focus Mode alone didn't move the needle much in early testing.
Pairing it directly with a specific planned task did. Silence needed a target.
#ProductThinking
We designed FOCERA assuming students have quiet, dedicated study spaces.
Feedback reminded us most don't.
Redesigned around distraction control, not environment control.
#ProductThinking
FOCERA is our first product. It won't be our last.
We're not a study app company. We're a company that builds tools for how people learn, work, and grow.

We almost built a weekly "coverage" summary for FOCERA — chapters touched, syllabus % complete.
Realized that number would make students feel good and tell them nothing true. Didn't ship it.
#ProductThinking
Before FOCERA's redesign: planner, timer, and quiz lived as three separate flows. Users had to think about which tool to open.
After: one flow, one decision. Fewer tools, more use.
#ProductThinking
We used to think our job was building features that required user discipline to work well.
Realized the better features are the ones that need less discipline, not more.
#ProductThinking
Building Focus Mode, we debated: mute notifications, or actually block access during a session?
Muting felt sufficient. Testing showed it wasn't. Silence isn't the same as removing the choice.
