The mission's is to enhance our understanding of the Sun's impact on Earth, including radiation, heat, particle flow, and magnetic fields.
Aditya L1 is placed in halo orbit.
L1 is one of the five spots in the moving Sun-Earth system, where the gravitational effects of the two bodies roughly balance each other. Lagrange points, named after Italian-French mathematician Josephy-Louis Lagrange who discovered them
Halo orbit insertion in L1
Aditya L-1 placed in a lower Earth orbit initially and then propelled toward the Sun.
It eventually reached a halo orbit around Lagrange point 1 (L1), approximately 1.5 million km from Earth, where it will study solar activities for 5 years.
The probe's positioning at L1 allows for continuous observation of the Sun, as L1 provides an unobstructed view of the Sun and is an ideal location for studying solar phenomena.
Studying the Sun from space is essential as Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field block certain harmful radiations and particles emitted by the Sun, making space-based observations crucial for ISRO.
