🇦🇪 The UAE is cautiously reopening diplomatic and economic channels with Iran while simultaneously deepening military ties with Israel and the US, a high-risk balancing act as the US-Iran ceasefire frays, the FT reports.

🔹Iran initiated the talks, according to Emirati academic Abdulkhaleq Abdulla. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed has delegated the effort to three brothers: Vice-President Sheikh Mansour, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah and national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon. The calculation, Abdulla said, is that war will neither overthrow Iran’s government nor defeat the Revolutionary Guards.

🔹Tehran has struck Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia during the latest escalation, but not the UAE itself. Abdulla expects the understanding to hold unless Iran directly attacks the country.

🔹The détente also reflects mounting economic strain. Most Western airlines remain absent, hotel occupancy has slumped, and several luxury hotels and restaurants have closed. Revenue fell sharply and there was capital flight. Dubai is gradually recovering, but bankers warn its orderly appearance may be masking deep damage.
