Daniel had been involved in a minor car accident.

The impact wasn't dramatic. He didn't break any bones, didn't lose consciousness, and walked away from the scene.

So he went home.

That evening, his neck felt a little sore.

By the next morning, the pain was worse.

Turning his head became difficult. He developed stiffness, a headache and aching across his shoulders.

“Maybe I just slept badly.”

But the accident had caused something called whiplash injury.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵?

Whiplash occurs when the neck is suddenly forced backward and forward, usually during a car accident or another sudden impact.

The rapid movement can strain or injure muscles, ligaments and other structures around the neck.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:

• Neck pain and stiffness
• Reduced neck movement
• Headaches, especially around the base of the skull
• Shoulder and upper-back pain
• Tenderness or muscle tightness
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Tingling or numbness in some cases

And here's something important:

You may not feel the full effects immediately.

Symptoms can appear hours or even later after the injury.

When should you seek urgent care?

Don't dismiss neck pain after significant trauma, especially if you develop:

• Severe or worsening neck pain
• Weakness or numbness in the arms or legs
• Difficulty walking or maintaining balance
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Severe headache
• Repeated vomiting
• Confusion or loss of consciousness

These can indicate a more serious injury and require urgent medical assessment.

Most uncomplicated whiplash injuries improve with appropriate care. Treatment may include staying gently active, pain relief when appropriate and physiotherapy when indicated.

Don't let “It was just a small accident” convince you to ignore your body.

After a sudden impact, listen to your neck.
Some injuries don't announce themselves immediately.
