Well, you are halfway there, congrats. It doesn’t mean “to say that you did not mean something you said earlier”, but it in fact does mean “to change stance”, or as you said “say that you have changed your opinion.”

Now, the hard part: connecting the dots.

I did not backtrack because the tweet I wrote was not my legitimate stance. That is why I deleted it. I simply made a mistake and acknowledged it. I have never changed my opinion.

Now, if I were to backtrack completely, I would:

a) present a different, contrary claim and represent it as legitimate (this scenario is not possible as the previous tweet was not a legitimate stance)

b) deny the existence of this tweet (which did not happen)
