It was a good idea to take it slow and precisely tune the radiating elements. It is resonant or near it across sizable portions of 40, 20, 17, and 15 meters. Probably will add the 10m element.
Finished the #DXCommander build this afternoon. Tomorrow I will tune it up and get OTA! This one is for my lab Chewie. I bought this antenna for our adventures and he passed soon after. Been staring at the box from #LordCallum for about a year.
Picked up a Jankopotomus (Evolve Meastro) and learned the new ones charge by usb-c which makes it tougher to charge on 12v. @WyomingSurvival had a great idea and I set my rig up the same way. Now I can charge in the field.
Parts in pic below.
Why get into radio? I met a Vietnam vet tonight who teared up telling me he talked to his wife in the U.S. from the jungle in 1967 and it saved his life. My uncle was one of the ham operators in the U.S. who volunteered to handle this kind of traffic. Communications matters.
The GP-3 can’t hear as far but when it’s head-to-head with painted GP-6 on local repeaters there is zero fuzz on the 3. Fuzz is very mild on the 6 but if it’s messing with RX it stands to reason I’m losing on TX too. It’s totally usable but I don’t like it. Live and learn!
Nice day to install new GP-6. I painted it black using Krylon Fusion to keep the neighbors quiet. It’s on the back side of the house as well. I was worried about carbon black conductivity and metals in paint but SWR is flat as a board and I’m pinging repeaters 50 miles away.
Reports are there is a slight fuzz on my signal but I’m on repeaters I’ve never reached before so I’m not ready call the paint test a failure. Not yet! I do hear a little fuzz too TBH. I’m full quieting within my region so I’m gonna keep testing. Only day 1.
Took the RV out for a weekend at the beach. Set up my gear and tuned up the EFHW antenna with the FT-891, LDG Z11 Pro II and a CW tone on 20 meters. The RV lights flickered and my kitchen vent fan turned on. I keyed up again the lights flickered and the vent fan shut off. 😂
