AALIYAH FOREVER
1979 - 2001 🤍
25 years ago today, we lost the Princess of R&B, Aaliyah, at age 22. For her 25th anniversary, I wanted to create an ethereal, dreamy & otherworldly design that captures her special aura & essence.
25th August 2001 was a devastating day, and 25 years later, it still breaks my heart. Although I never knew Aaliyah personally, her passing hurt as though I had lost a friend or family member. I was so excited to see where her artistry would take her after the release of her incredible self-titled album only a month prior + all the film projects she had lined up. She had so much more to give, and it wasn’t supposed to end the way it did…
Even though I was just a kid, I made a promise to myself in 2001 after Aaliyah’s passing that I would continue to honour her through my art. Today, as an established fashion illustrator, I’m incredibly grateful to share my Aaliyah illustrations with my supporters and her dedicated fans. It means a lot to help continue her legacy. Social media also gave me the opportunity to connect & collaborate with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, which has been such a blessing. We’ve built a lovely friendship, and I was honoured to contribute creatively to the Aaliyah Barbie doll released last year. Having Rashad support and co-sign my work celebrating his baby sis, means the world to me.
Forever my favourite artist, Aaliyah will always be a huge source of inspiration to me. Her music, her style, the way she carried herself with such class, regal poise, grace & a maturity beyond her 22 years.
Although it’s heartbreaking that she isn’t here to receive her well deserved flowers, it’s comforting & beautiful to see her legacy continue to flourish. Her timeless body of work & style still inspires new generations of artists today! She will forever be THAT girl, the blueprint and an icon! @aaliyah@RAD_6
We love & miss you forever, AALIYAH. 🕊️🤍
