West of England SustainableTransport&ActiveTravel

Calling for clean, affordable, accessible and efficient transport in the West of England.

We at WESTACT have few things to say about the West England Mayor's Vison for Public Transport. 1/

It's great that the PM is supportive of trams in West of England. As not everyone lives close enough to eventual tram stops, he needs to ensure that there is also funding for reliable and frequent bus connections. #integratedtransport

How ironic that when people are getting over-exercised about bikes & floating bus stops, we have an orgy of real, unacknowledged, everyday & deadly traffic violence that triggers *zero* calls for law changes or clampdowns on access to cars.

It's that time again - when First Bus brings out its new timetables. Are they better, worse or the same as the last ones?

That's great. Does it mean we'll get a tram to the Airport first or better services for everyone? Hopefully the cost won't further diminish our climate mitigation measures.

Great idea in principle but without safe places to walk it will be difficult for some, particularly in rural areas with single track roads and speeding traffic.

Good move from WECA improving these Park & Ride services. It's great for people who have cars and/or a decent connecting bus service from where they live. Sadly many don't.

Former Transport Secretary Harper objects to a WPL because of the cost being passed onto staff. If public transport improvements are funded by the levy, the benefits would outweigh the costs even for employers.

'CITY OF CARS' FILM SCREENING, 28th MAY With over 700 car deaths in Bristol and Somerset last year, we urgently need to talk about the safety of our cars and our roads. Screening followed by discussion.

I don't want self driving cars.
I want boring things like public transit that comes so regularly I don't need to check a schedule. I want bike lanes so accessible it's preferable to Uber. I want a city that's not built around cars-as-default.

Andy Burnham brought Manchester's buses back under public control in 2023 and believes #WECA could follow a similar transport model. If he's the next Prime Minister, will he put his money where his mouth is? #franchisingnow

As long as they don't have to do it, if it costs them more, they won't do it. #FranchiseOurBuses

There were more than 700 fatal or serious injury collisions happened last year - almost two every single day.

Franchising will be so much easier to achieve with North Somerset inside the WECA tent. A joined up approach to walking, wheeling and shared transport will be more achievable when we're all together.

[Reclaim Our Buses (West of England) @ReclaimOurBuses]

Don't forget to give your views on North Somerset joining the West of England Combined Mayoral Authority (WECA). We urge everyone to say 'yes', especially as it will be easier to bring in bus franchising, which will benefit the whole region.

So, the West of England is behind smaller European cities, in terms of mass transit and it has really poor bus services. While we wait for trams, better buses would be a great boost the region's economy, wellbeing and to fighting climate change.

[West of England SustainableTransport&ActiveTravel @WESTACT_]

Even if trams & better rail are part of our future, we'll still need better buses. We believe franchising is the way to achieve this.

The WECA Mayor talked about having greater control over our buses but refuses to take any steps towards franchising. Why?? 11/11

Even just improving frequency of services on existing lines could make a difference but there could be even more. 10/
