Member States adopted a resolution on Sustainable Financing for Health for All: A Strategic Agenda for the WHO South-East Asia Region.

🎯 The resolution places equity at the centre of health financing reforms and calls for stronger, more sustainable and resilient health financing systems to advance Universal Health Coverage.

🌏 It reaffirms the commitment of Member States to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3.8, and to strengthening health systems, primary health care and financial protection towards achieving that goal.

“Closing the Gap to End TB: Strategic Priorities for the WHO South-East Asia Region” was launched during the 79th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia.

The 🆕 publication brings together regional evidence, modelling, Member State experiences and implementation priorities to identify where action is most urgently needed to accelerate progress towards ending TB.

At the Sustaining the Last Mile: Advancing SRHR and Gender Equality for the Most Vulnerable in a Changing World side-event, one message came through clearly: women's strength was never in question. What we owe them is a health system that enables — choices supported by rights, that meets them where they are.

Senior officials from Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste shared insights from their work. Gender responsive health financing, Gender budgeting, and gender disaggregated data are the need of the hour.

The WHO SEARO Youth Council representative from Timor-Leste spoke on behalf of the Council, highlighting the need for institutionalized meaningful youth engagement in policy and programme development and peer-to-peer learning, for young people to have a real seat at the table.

Partners spoke about collaboration and allyship, because the last mile cannot be closed alone.

After the 4⃣-day meeting in Dili, Timor-Leste, Member States of the WHO South-East Asia Region adopted landmark decisions to advance health equity, strengthen health systems and accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage.

Health Ministers, senior health officials and delegates from across the Region came together to advance health and well-being for all. 🌏

Key decisions included:

📌 The Dili Declaration on Human Resources for Health: Equity in Specialized Care

📌 Resolutions on medical devices, diagnostics and assistive technology; health facility resilience; patient and blood safety; sustainable health financing; ending TB; and vaccine confidence and uptake to advance measles and rubella elimination

📌 Extending the regional action plan on viral hepatitis, HIV and sexually transmitted infections to 2030

📌 Strengthening regional cooperation on digital health and artificial intelligence

For the first time at a WHO Regional Committee, Member States of the WHO South-East Asia Region discussed medical devices as a dedicated agenda item and adopted a resolution to strengthen national systems for:

✔️ Quality-assured, affordable medical devices
✔️ In vitro diagnostics (IVDs)
✔️ Assistive technologies

The resolution also places particular emphasis on access at primary and other appropriate levels of care, especially for rural, remote, island and underserved populations.

I met #India’s Health Minister @JPNadda and congratulated him on the country’s impressive health gains, particularly in maternal and child health and the fight against noncommunicable diseases.

Through 160,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, India is bringing screening for hypertension, diabetes and common cancers closer to communities, with referral pathways for care.

India’s ASHA workers are another powerful example of health care reaching people where they are, supporting mothers and children from conception through adolescence. Together with expanded immunization and the rise in institutional deliveries from 78% to 93%, this is contributing to sustained declines in maternal and child mortality.

We also discussed India’s determined efforts to #EndTB, strengthen regulation of medical products, and its important support for @WHO, including on traditional medicine and the ongoing negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing system of the WHO Pandemic Agreement. #RC79

At #RC79, Member States committed to stronger, more integrated action to close critical gaps and #endTB.

Countries agreed to:

🔍 Strengthen early diagnosis through routine services, systematic screening and active case finding, especially among high-risk and underserved populations
🧪 Expand access to WHO-recommended rapid and molecular diagnostics, including digital technologies where appropriate
🤝 Make TB care more people-centred, with better access to quality treatment for drug-resistant TB, nutritional and community-based support
🛡️ Address stigma, discrimination and the social, financial and geographic barriers that keep people from accessing care
💉 Strengthen readiness for the introduction of new TB vaccines
